DTC U029A-123: Lost Communication with Hybrid Battery Pack Sensor Module: Procedure

  1. CHECK DTC OUTPUT (HYBRID CONTROL) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Hybrid Control / Trouble Codes.
    4. Check for DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      Only U029A-123 is output. A
      DTCs other than U029A-123 are also output. B
    5. Disconnect the Techstream from the DLC3.

    B → See step   7 

    A: Go to next step 

  2. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGCT VOLTAGE) See step   1 

    NG → CHECK BATTERY SMART UNIT POWER SOURCE CIRCUIT (IGCT, GND) 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (POWER MANAGEMENT CONTROL ECU - BATTERY SMART UNIT) 
    WARNING:

    Be sure to wear insulated gloves.

    1. Check that the service plug grip is not installed.
      NOTE:

      After removing the service plug grip, do not turn the power switch on (READY), unless instructed by the repair procedures, because this may cause a malfunction.

    2. Disconnect connector L5 from the power management control ECU. Refer to REMOVAL .
      NOTE:

      Before disconnecting the connector, push in on the connector body to check that the connector is not loose or disconnected.

    3. Remove the No. 1 hybrid vehicle battery carrier bracket sub-assembly. Refer to REMOVAL - Step 25 .
    4. Disconnect connector c1 from the battery smart unit.
      NOTE:
      • Before disconnecting the connector, push in on the connector body to check that the connector is not loose or disconnected.
      • Push in on each connector between the power management control ECU and the battery smart unit to check that each connector is not loose or disconnected.

    5. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      L5-33 (BTH-) - c1-3 (BTH-) Power switch off Below 1 Ω
      c1-2 (BTH+) - c1-8 (GND) and Body ground Power switch off 10 kΩ or higher
      c1-3 (BTH-) - c1-8 (GND) and Body ground Power switch off 10 kΩ or higher

    6. Remove the IGCT No. 2 fuse and AM2 fuse from the engine room relay block and junction block assembly.

    7. Disconnect all connectors from the power management control ECU.
    8. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      NOTE:

      When taking a measurement with a tester, do not apply excessive force to the tester probe to avoid damaging the holder.

    9. Connect the battery smart unit connector.
    10. Install the No. 1 hybrid vehicle battery carrier bracket sub-assembly.
    11. Connect the power management control ECU connectors.

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  4. CHECK POWER MANAGEMENT CONTROL ECU 
    WARNING:

    Be sure to wear insulated gloves.

    1. Check that the service plug grip is not installed.
      NOTE:

      After removing the service plug grip, do not turn the power switch on (READY), unless instructed by the repair procedures, because this may cause a malfunction.

    2. Remove the No. 1 hybrid vehicle battery carrier bracket sub-assembly. Refer to REMOVAL - Step 25 .
    3. Disconnect connector c1 from the battery smart unit.

    4. Connect the cable to the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.
    5. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    6. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      c1-2 (BTH+) - c1-8 (GND) Power switch on (IG) 2.3 to 2.7 V
      c1-3 (BTH-) - c1-8 (GND) Power switch on (IG) 2.3 to 2.7 V

      NOTE:

      Turning the power switch on (IG) with the battery smart unit connector and power management control ECU connector disconnected causes other DTCs to be stored. Clear the DTCs after performing this inspection.

    7. Turn the power switch off.
    8. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.
    9. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      c1-2 (BTH+) - c1-3 (BTH-) Power switch off 4.4 to 5.4 kΩ

      HINT: 

      Resistance becomes 2.0 kΩ or less when there is a short circuit in the power management control ECU.

    10. Connect the battery smart unit connector.
    11. Install the No. 1 hybrid vehicle battery carrier bracket sub-assembly.

    NG → See step   6 

    OK → See step   5 

  5. REPLACE BATTERY SMART UNIT. Refer to  COMPONENTS 
  6. REPLACE POWER MANAGEMENT CONTROL ECU. Refer to  COMPONENTS 
  7. GO TO DTC CHART (HYBRID BATTERY SYSTEM). Refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART
