Tachometer Malfunction: Procedure

  1. CHECK CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM 
    1. Check if a CAN communication DTC is output. Refer to DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM .

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      CAN communication DTC is not output. A
      CAN communication DTC is output. B

    B → See step   6 

    A: Go to next step 

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (TACHOMETER OPERATION) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Active Test.
    5. Check the operation by referring to the table below.
      COMBINATION METER

      Tester Display Test Part Control Range Diagnostic Note
      Tacho Meter Operation Tachometer 0, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000 (rpm) -

      OK

      Tachometer indication is normal.

    NG → See step   7 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (ENGINE RPM) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Data List.
    5. Check the values by referring to the table below.
      COMBINATION METER

      Tester Display Measurement Item/Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
      Engine Rpm Engine speed / Min.: 0 rpm, Max.: 12750 rpm Almost same as actual engine speed (Tachometer indication) If data received from the ECM exceeds the range that can be displayed on the meter, the meter continues to display the maximum value of the range.

      OK

      Engine speed displayed on the Techstream is almost the same as the indicated engine speed.

    NG → See step   4 

    OK → See step   7 

  4. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (ENGINE SPEED) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream ON.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List.
    5. Check the values by referring to the table below.
      ENGINE AND ECT (FOR 2AZ-FE)

      Engine Speed Engine speed:
      Min.: 0 rpm, Max.: 16383.75 rpm
      650 to 750 rpm: Idling -
      ENGINE AND ECT (FOR 2ZR-FE)

      Engine Speed Engine speed:
      Min.: 0 rpm, Max.: 16383.75 rpm
      650 to 750 rpm: Idling (Automatic transaxle)
      600 to 700 rpm: Idling (Manual transaxle)

      Engine speed displayed on the Techstream is almost the same as the indicated engine speed.

  5. REPLACE ECM 
    1. Replace the ECM with a new or known good one. Refer to REMOVAL - Step 5 for 2AZ-FE. Refer to REMOVAL - Step 4 for 2ZR-FE).

      OK

      The operation of the tachometer returns to normal.

    NG → See step   7 

    OK → END 

  6. GO TO CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM. Refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING 
  7. REPLACE COMBINATION METER. Refer to  REMOVAL - Step 4 
  8. GO TO SFI SYSTEM (for 2AZ-FE). Refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING 
  9. GO TO SFI SYSTEM (for 2ZR-FE). Refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING
