Fuel Receiver Gauge Malfunction: Procedure

  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (FUEL METER OPERATION) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Active Test.
    5. Check the operation by referring to the table below.
      COMBINATION METER

      Tester Display Test Part Control Range Diagnostic Note
      Fuel Meter Operation Fuel receiver gauge EMPTY, 1/2, FULL Confirm that the vehicle is stopped while the engine is idling

      OK

      Gauge indication is normal.

    NG → See step   6 

    OK: Go to next step 

  2. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (FUEL INPUT) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Data List.
    5. Check the values by referring to the table below.
      1. for 2WD
        COMBINATION METER

        Tester Display Measurement Item/Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
        Fuel Input Fuel input signal / Min.: 0, Max.: 127.5 Fuel gauge indicates (E): 5.0 (L)
        Fuel gauge indicates (1/2): 25.0 (L)
        Fuel gauge indicates (F): 42.6 (L)
        -

        OK

        Fuel input signal displayed on the Techstream is almost the same as fuel gauge indication.

      2. for 4WD
        COMBINATION METER

        Tester Display Measurement Item/Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
        Fuel Input Fuel input signal / Min.: 0, Max.: 127.5 Fuel gauge indicates (E): 5.5 (L)
        Fuel gauge indicates (1/2): 24.8 (L)
        Fuel gauge indicates (F): 43.9 (L)

        OK

        Fuel input signal displayed on the Techstream is almost the same as fuel gauge indication.

    NG → See step   6 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER - FUEL SENDER GAUGE ASSEMBLY) 
    1. Check the harness and connector (for 2WD).

      1. Disconnect the L13 connector.
      2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard Resistance

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        E55-25 (L) - L13-2 (FS) Always Below 1 Ω
        E55-25 (L) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
        E55-10 (E) - L13-3 (FE) Always Below 1 Ω
        E55-10 (E) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
    2. Check the harness and connector (for 4WD).

      1. Disconnect the L12 and L13 connectors.
      2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard Resistance

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        E55-25 (L) - L13-2 (FS) Always Below 1 Ω
        E55-25 (L) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
        L13-3 (FE) - L12-1 (FS) Always Below 1 Ω
        L13-3 (FE) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
        E55-10 (E) - L12-2 (E) Always Below 1 Ω
        E55-10 (E) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  4. INSPECT FUEL SUCTION PUMP AND GAUGE 
    1. Remove the fuel suction pump and gauge.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      2 (FS) - 2 (S) Always Below 1 Ω
      3 (FE) - 1 (FE) Always Below 1 Ω

    NG → REPLACE FUEL SUCTION PUMP AND GAUGE 

    OK: Go to next step 

  5. INSPECT FUEL SENDER GAUGE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Inspect the fuel sender gauge assembly (for 2WD).

      1. Remove the fuel sender gauge assembly.
      2. Check that the float moves smoothly between E and F.
      3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard Resistance

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        1 (FE) - 2 (S) Float level is F (upper) 13.5 to 16.5 Ω
        1 (FE) - 2 (S) Float level is between F (upper) and E (lower) 13.5 to 414.5 Ω (Gradually changes)
        1 (FE) - 2 (S) Float level is E (lower) 405.5 to 414.5 Ω
    2. Inspect the fuel sender gauge assembly (for 4WD).

      1. Remove the fuel sender gauge assembly.
      2. Check that the float moves smoothly between E and F.
      3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard Resistance (Main)

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        1 (FE) - 2 (S) Float level is F (upper) 6.5 to 8.5 Ω
        1 (FE) - 2 (S) Float level is between F (upper) and E (lower) 6.5 to 245.7 Ω (Gradually changes)
        1 (FE) - 2 (S) Float level is E (lower) 240.7 to 245.7 Ω

        Standard Resistance (Sub)

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        1 (FS) - 2 (E) Float level is F (upper) 6.5 to 8.5 Ω
        1 (FS) - 2 (E) Float level is between F (upper) and E (lower) 6.5 to 168.8 Ω (Gradually changes)
        1 (FS) - 2 (E) Float level is E (lower) 164.8 to 168.8 Ω

  6. REPLACE COMBINATION METER. Refer to  REMOVAL - Step 4 
  7. REPLACE FUEL SENDER GAUGE ASSEMBLY (for 2AZ-FE). Refer to  REMOVAL 
  8. REPLACE FUEL SENDER GAUGE ASSEMBLY (for 2ZR-FE). Refer to  REMOVAL
