Tachometer Malfunction: Procedure

  1. CHECK CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM 
    1. Check if a CAN communication DTC is output. Refer to DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM .
      RESULT

      Result Proceed to
      CAN communication DTC is not output A
      CAN communication DTC is output B

    B → See step   5 

    A: Go to next step 

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (TACHOMETER OPERATION) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Active Test.
    5. According to the display on the Techstream, perform the Active Test.
      COMBINATION METER

      Tester Display Test Part Control Range Diagnostic Note
      TachoMeter Operation Tachometer 0, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000 Operate with IG ON and the vehicle is stopped.

      OK

      Tachometer indication is normal.

    NG → See step   6 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (ENGINE RPM) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Data List.
    5. According to the display on the Techstream, read the Data List.
      COMBINATION METER

      Tester Display Measurement Item/Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
      Engine RPM Engine speed/
      Min.: 0 RPM, Max.: 12750 RPM
      600 to 700 RPM: Idling -

      OK

      Engine speed displayed on the Techstream is almost the same as the tachometer indication.

      HINT: 

      Check the engine speed when the engine is fully warmed up, and the air conditioning and all electrical accessories are off.

    NG → See step   6 

    OK: Go to next step 

  4. CHECK ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM 
    1. Check if a engine control DTC is output. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR for 2GR-FE. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR for 1AR-FE.
      RESULT

      Result Proceed to
      Engine control DTC is not output A
      Engine control DTC is output (for 2GR-FE) B
      Engine control DTC is output (for 1AR-FE) C

    B → See step   7 

    C → See step   8 

    A → See step   6 

  5. GO TO CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM. Refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING 
  6. REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  7. GO TO SFI SYSTEM (for 2GR-FE). Refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING 
  8. GO TO SFI SYSTEM (for 1AR-FE). Refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING
