Malfunction in Water Temperature Warning Light: Procedure

  1. CHECK CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM 
    1. Check if a CAN communication DTC is output. Refer to DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM .

      Result

      CAN communication DTCs are not output. A
      CAN communication DTCs are output. B

    A: Go to next step 

  2. SYSTEM CHECK 
    1. Check the water temperature warning light.

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      Water temperature warning light does not come on. A
      Water temperature warning light remains on. B

    A: Go to next step 

  3. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (INDICATOR. LAMP COOLANT HOT) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Active Test.
    5. Check the operation by referring to the table below.
      COMBINATION METER

      Indicator. Lamp Coolant Hot Coolant temperature hot warning light OFF or ON Confirm that the vehicle is stopped with the engine idling

  4. CHECK FOR DTC 
    1. Check for DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR for SFI system. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR for meter/gauge system).

      SFI system DTCs are output. B
      DTC B1503 is output. C

  5. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (COOLANT TEMPERATURE, COOLANT TEMP) 
    1. Set the vehicle in maintenance mode using the Techstream. Refer to INSPECTION MODE PROCEDURE .
    2. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    3. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    4. Turn the Techstream on.
    5. Enter the following menus:
      1. for Combination Meter: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Data List.
      2. for Engine: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List.
    6. Check the values by referring to the table below.
      COMBINATION METER

    7. Check the values by referring to the table below.

      80 to 100°C (176 to 212°F): After warming up Yes
      Diagnostic Note:
      This is the engine coolant temperature.
      HINT: 
      • After warming up the engine, the engine coolant temperature is 80 to 100°C (176 to 212°F).
      • After a long soak, the engine coolant temperature, intake air temperature and ambient air temperature are approximately equal.
      • If the value is -40°C (-40°F), or higher than 135°C (275°F), the sensor circuit may be open or shorted.
      • Check if the engine overheats when the value indicates higher than 135°C (275°F).

      HINT: 

      When the Data List values of the ECUs do not match, a signal output error of the ECM is suspected.

    NG → See step   10 

    OK: Go to next step 

  6. REPLACE NO. 3 METER CIRCUIT PLATE 
    1. Replace the No. 3 meter circuit plate with a new or a known good one. Refer to DISASSEMBLY .

      OK

      The operation of the water temperature warning light returns to normal.

    NG → See step   10 

    OK → END 

  7. GO TO CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM. Refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING 
  8. GO TO SFI SYSTEM. Refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING 
  9. GO TO METER / GAUGE SYSTEM. Refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING 
  10. GO TO SFI SYSTEM. Refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING
