Tachometer Malfunction: Procedure

  1. CHECK CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM 
    1. Check if CAN communication DTC is output. Refer to DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM .

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      CAN communication DTC is not output. A
      CAN communication DTC is output. B

    B → See step   6 

    A: Go to next step 

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM 
    1. Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Ignition switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the tester on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Active Test.
    5. Check the operation by referring to the values in the table below.
      COMBINATION METER:

      Tester Display Test Part Control Range Diagnostic Note
      Tacho Meter Operation Tachometer 0, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000 (RPM) -

      OK

      Needle indication is normal.

    NG → See step   7 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (ENGINE SPEED SIGNAL) 
    1. Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Turn the tester on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Data List.
    5. Check the values by referring to the values in the table below.
      COMBINATION METER:

      Tester Display Measurement Item/Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
      Engine RPM Engine speed/Min.: 0 RPM, Max.: 12750 RPM Almost same as actual engine speed (When engine is running) If data received from the ECM exceeds the range that can be displayed on the meter, the meter continues to display the maximum value of the range.

      OK

      Engine speed displayed on the tester is almost the same as the actual engine speed.

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      OK A
      NG (for 2GR-FE) B
      NG (for 1AR-FE) C

    NG → See step   4 

    OK → See step   7 

  4. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (ENGINE SPEED SIGNAL) 
    1. Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Ignition switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the tester ON.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List.
    5. Check the values by referring to the table below.
      ENGINE AND ECT:

      Tester Display Measurement Item/Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
      Engine Speed Engine speed/Min.: 0 RPM, Max.: 16383.75 RPM Almost same as actual engine speed (When engine is running) -

      OK

      Engine speed displayed on the tester is almost the same as the actual engine speed.

      Result

      NG (for 2GR-FE) B
      NG (for 1AR-FE) C

    B → See step   8 

    C → See step   9 

    A: Go to next step 

  5. REPLACE ECM (for 2GR-FE) 
    1. Replace the ECM with a new or a normal one. Refer to REMOVAL - Step 7 for 2GR-FE. Refer to REMOVAL for 1AR-FE.

      OK

      The operation of the tachometer returns to normal.

    NG → See step   7 

    OK → END 

  6. GO TO CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM. Refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING 
  7. REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  8. GO TO SFI SYSTEM (for 2GR-FE). Refer to  DTC CHECK / CLEAR 
  9. GO TO SFI SYSTEM (for 1AR-FE). Refer to  DTC CHECK / CLEAR
