Engine Coolant Temperature Receiver Gauge Malfunction: Procedure

  1. CHECK CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM 
    1. Check if a CAN communication DTC is output. Refer to DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM .

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      CAN communication DTC is not output. A
      CAN communication DTC is output. B

    A: Go to next step 

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (WATER TEMPERATURE METER OPERATION) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Active Test.
    5. Check the operation by referring to the table below.
      COMBINATION METER

      Water Temperature Meter Operation Engine coolant temperature receiver gauge Low, Normal, Hi -

      OK

      Gauge indication is normal.

    NG → See step   7 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (COOLANT TEMPERATURE) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Data List.
      COMBINATION METER

      Tester Display Measurement Item/Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
      Coolant Temperature Engine coolant temperature / Min.: 0°C (32°F), Max.: 127.5°C (261.5°F) After warming up: 80 to 95°C (176 to 203°F)
      • If -40°C (-40°F) or less: Sensor circuit open
      • If 140°C (284°F) or more: Sensor circuit shorted

      OK

      Engine coolant temperature value displayed on the Techstream is almost the same as engine coolant temperature receiver gauge indication.

    NG → See step   7 

    OK: Go to next step 

  4. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (COOLANT TEMP) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List.
    5. Check the values by referring to the table below.
      ENGINE AND ECT (FOR 2AZ-FE)

      Tester Display Measurement Item/Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
      Coolant Temp Engine coolant temperature:
      Min.: -40°C (-40°F),
      Max.: 140°C (284°F)
      80 to 100°C (176 to 212°F):
      After warming up
      • If value -40°C (-40°F): sensor circuit open
      • If value 140°C (284°F): sensor circuit shorted
      ENGINE AND ECT (FOR 2ZR-FE)

      Tester Display Measurement Item/Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
      Coolant Temp Engine coolant temperature:
      Min.: -40°C (-40°F),
      Max.: 140°C (284°F)
      80 to 100°C (176 to 212°F):
      After warming up
      • If value -40°C (-40°F): sensor circuit open
      • If value 140°C (284°F): sensor circuit shorted

      OK

      Engine coolant temperature value displayed on the Techstream is almost the same as actual engine coolant temperature.

  5. REPLACE COMBINATION METER 
    1. Replace the combination meter with a new or known good one. Refer to REMOVAL - Step 4 .

      OK

      The operation of the combination meter returns to normal.

  6. GO TO CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM. Refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING 
  7. REPLACE COMBINATION METER. Refer to  REMOVAL - Step 4 
  8. REPLACE ECM (for 2AZ-FE). Refer to  REMOVAL - Step 5 
  9. REPLACE ECM (for 2ZR-FE). Refer to  REMOVAL - Step 4
