Speed Signal Circuit: Procedure

  1. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (JUNCTION CONNECTOR) 
    1. Check for a short in the circuit connected to the junction connector shown in the wiring diagram.

      HINT: 

      If voltage is not present, the circuit (ECU) was possibly malfunctioning. This is the circuit that will be diagnosed by following the step A that follows.

      1. Disconnect the junction connectors.

      2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard voltage

        Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
        E24-7 - Body ground Ignition switch ON 4.5 to 14 V
        D53-5 (*1) - Body ground Ignition switch ON 4.5 to 14 V
        E24-5 (*2) - Body ground Ignition switch ON 4.5 to 14 V
        D53-7 - Body ground Ignition switch ON 4.5 to 14 V

        *1: w/ Smart Key System

        *2: w/ Back Door Speaker

        RESULT

        Result Proceed to
        Voltage is not present in one circuit A
        Voltage is present in all the circuits B

    B → See step   8 

    A: Go to next step 

  2. SYSTEM CHECK 
    1. Check the circuit that did not present voltage in step 6.
      RESULT

      Tester Connection System that uses the circuit Proceed to
      D53-5 (*1) - Body ground Smart key system A
      D53-7 - Body ground Hybrid Vehicle Control System B
      E24-7 (*2) - Body ground Navigation system C
      E24-7 (*3) - Body ground Audio/visual system D
      E24-5 (*4) - Body ground Separate type amplifier system E

      *1: w/ Smart Key System

      *2: w/ Navigation System

      *3: w/o Navigation System

      *4: w/ Back Door Speaker

    A: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (MAIN BODY ECU CIRCUIT) 
    1. Disconnect the D9 main body ECU connector.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      D9-9 (SPD) - D53-5 Always Below 1 Ω
      D9-9 (SPD) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → REPLACE MAIN BODY ECU 

  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (HYBRID VEHICLE CONTROL ECU CIRCUIT) 
    1. Disconnect the D72 hybrid vehicle control ECU connector.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      D72-14 (SPDI) - D53-7 Always Below 1 Ω
      D72-14 (SPDI) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   15 

  5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (NAVIGATION RECEIVER CIRCUIT) 
    1. Disconnect the E5 navigation receiver assembly connector.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E5-3 (SPD) - E24-7 Always Below 1 Ω
      E5-3 (SPD) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   17 

  6. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (RADIO RECEIVER ASSEMBLY CIRCUIT) 
    1. Disconnect the E3 radio receiver assembly connector.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E3-3 (SPD) - E24-7 Always Below 1 Ω
      E3-3 (SPD) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   16 

  7. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (STEREO COMPONENT AMPLIFIER CIRCUIT) 
    1. Disconnect the N14 stereo component amplifier connector.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      N14-11 (SPD) - E24-5 Always Below 1 Ω
      N14-11 (SPD) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   18 

  8. INSPECT ECU TERMINAL VOLTAGE (INPUT VOLTAGE) 
    1. Disconnect the E1 meter connector.

    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      E1-9 (+S) - Body ground Ignition switch ON 4.5 to 14 V

      HINT: 

      If any of the ECUs specified in the wiring diagram supplied power to the combination meter, the combination meter will output a waveform.

    NG → See step   11 

    OK: Go to next step 

  9. INSPECT COMBINATION METER (OUTPUT VOLTAGE) 
    1. Reconnect the E1 meter connector.
    2. Disconnect the A44 skid control ECU connector.

    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      A44-22 (SP1) - Body ground Ignition switch ON 11 to 14 V

    NG → See step   12 

    OK: Go to next step 

  10. INSPECT SKID CONTROL ECU (INPUT WAVEFORM) 
    1. Check the input waveform.

      1. Reconnect the A44 skid control ECU connector.
      2. Remove the combination meter assembly with the connector(s) still connected.
      3. Connect an oscilloscope to terminals E1-29 (SI) and body ground.
      4. Turn the ignition switch to ON (READY).
      5. Turn the wheel slowly.
      6. Check the signal waveform according to the condition(s) in the table below.
        Item Condition
        Tool setting 5 V/DIV., 20 ms./DIV.
        Vehicle condition Driving at approx. 20 km/h (12 mph)

        OK

        The waveform is displayed as shown in the illustration.

        HINT: 

        When the system is functioning normally, one wheel revolution generates 4 pulses. As the vehicle speed increases, the width indicated by (A) in the illustration narrows.

    NG → See step   14 

    OK → See step   13 

  11. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER - JUNCTION CONNECTOR) 
    1. Disconnect the junction connector.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E1-9 (+S) - E24-6 Always Below 1 Ω
      E1-9 (+S) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → REPLACE JUNCTION CONNECTOR 

  12. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER - SKID CONTROL ECU) 
    1. Disconnect the E1 meter connector.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A44-22 (SP1) - E1-29 (SI) Always Below 1 Ω
      A44-22 (SP1) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   13 

  13. REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  14. REPLACE SKID CONTROL ECU. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  15. REPLACE HYBRID VEHICLE CONTROL ECU. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  16. REPLACE RADIO RECEIVER ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  17. REPLACE NAVIGATION RECEIVER ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  18. REPLACE STEREO COMPONENT AMPLIFIER. Refer to  REMOVAL
