DTC P0AE2-161: Hybrid Battery Precharge Contactor Circuit Stuck Closed: Procedure

  1. CHECK DTC OUTPUT (HV) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    3. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Hybrid Control / Trouble Codes.
    4. Check if DTCs are output.

      Result

      P0AE0-228 is output.

    YES → GO TO  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART  DTC CHART 

    NO: Go to next step 

  2. CHECK CONNECTOR CONNECTION CONDITION (HYBRID VEHICLE CONTROL ECU CONNECTOR). Refer to  PROCEDURE - Step 3 

    NG → CONNECT SECURELY 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK CONNECTOR CONNECTION CONDITION (BATTERY PACK WIRE CONNECTOR) 
    1. Check the connection of the battery pack wire connector.

      OK

      The connector is connected securely and there are no contact problems.

      HINT: 

      For the removal and installation procedures related to inspection of the connection of the battery pack wire connector. Refer to REMOVAL .

    NG → CONNECT SECURELY 

    OK: Go to next step 

  4. CHECK HYBRID VEHICLE CONTROL ECU 
    1. Disconnect the battery pack wire connector. Refer to REMOVAL .

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      SMRP (On1-8) - Body ground 370 to 430 kΩ

    NG → See step   11 

    OK: Go to next step 

  5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (HYBRID VEHICLE CONTROL ECU - BATTERY PACK WIRE CONNECTOR) 
    1. Disconnect the A61 hybrid vehicle control ECU.
    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      SMRG (A61-96) - Body ground Below 1 V
      NOTE:

      Turning the power switch on (IG) with the hybrid vehicle control ECU connector disconnected causes other DTCs to be stored. Clear the DTCs after performing this inspection.

    4. Turn the power switch off.
    5. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance (Check for open)

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      SMRG (A61-96) - CON3 (On1-2) Below 1 Ω

      Standard resistance (Check for short)

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      SMRG (A61-96) or CON3 (On1-2) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  6. CHECK CONNECTOR CONNECTION CONDITION (HV RELAY CONNECTOR) 
    WARNING:

    Be sure to wear insulated gloves.

    1. Turn the power switch off and remove the service plug grip. Refer to PRECAUTION .

    2. Check the connection of the low voltage connector that drives the HV relay assembly.

      Result

      The connector is connected securely and there are no contact problems.

      HINT: 

      For the removal and installation procedures related to inspection of the connection of the connector that drives the HV relay assembly. Refer to REMOVAL .

    NG → CONNECT SECURELY 

    OK: Go to next step 

  7. CHECK CONNECTOR CONNECTION CONDITION (HYBRID VEHICLE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY CONNECTOR) 
    WARNING:

    Be sure to wear insulated gloves.

    1. Check that the service plug grip is not installed.

    2. Check the connection of the low voltage connector of the hybrid vehicle converter (DC/DC converter).

      Result

      The connector is connected securely and there are no contact problems.

    NG → CONNECT SECURELY 

    OK: Go to next step 

  8. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (HV RELAY ASSEMBLY - BATTERY PACK WIRE CONNECTOR) See step   5 

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  9. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (HYBRID VEHICLE CONVERTER - BATTERY PACK WIRE CONNECTOR) 
    WARNING:

    Be sure to wear insulated gloves.

    1. Check that the service plug grip is not installed.
    2. Disconnect the n4 hybrid vehicle converter (DC/DC converter) connector.

    3. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    4. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      SMRP (On1-8) - Body ground Below 1 V
      NOTE:

      Turning the power switch on (IG) with the hybrid vehicle converter (DC/DC converter) connector disconnected causes other DTCs to be stored. Clear the DTCs after performing this inspection.

    5. Turn the power switch off.
    6. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance (Check for open)

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      SMRP (On1-8) - SMRP (n4-4) Below 1 Ω

      Standard resistance (Check for short)

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      SMRP (On1-8) or SMRP (n4-4) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  10. INSPECT HV RELAY ASSEMBLY (SMRG) See step   7 

    NG → See step   13 

    OK → See step   12 

  11. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (HYBRID VEHICLE CONTROL ECU - BATTERY PACK WIRE CONNECTOR) 
    NOTE:

    Be sure to wear insulated gloves.

    1. Check that the service plug grip is not installed.
    2. Disconnect the A61 hybrid vehicle control ECU connector.
    3. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    4. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      SMRP (A61-72) - Body ground Below 1 V
      NOTE:

      Turning the power switch on (IG) with the hybrid vehicle control ECU connector disconnected causes other DTCs to be stored. Clear the DTCs after performing this inspection.

    5. Turn the power switch off.
    6. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance (Check for open)

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      SMRP (A61-72) - SMRP (On1-8) Below 1 Ω

      Standard resistance (Check for short)

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      SMRP (A61-72) or SMRP (On1-8) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   14 

  12. REPLACE HYBRID VEHICLE CONVERTER. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  13. REPLACE HV RELAY ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  14. REPLACE HYBRID VEHICLE CONTROL ECU. Refer to  REMOVAL
