Inspection Procedure

  1. CHECK CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM 
    1. Check if a CAN communication DTC is output (See DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM ).

    Result 

    RESULT REFERENCE

    Result Proceed to
    CAN communication DTC is not output. A
    CAN communication DTC is output. B

    B: GO TO CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM  (See HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING )

    A: Go to Next Step 

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (TACHOMETER OPERATION) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Active Test.
    5. Check the operation by referring to the table below.

    Combination Meter 

    CONTROL RANGE REFERENCE

    Tester Display Test Part Control Range Diagnostic Note
    Tacho Meter Operation Tachometer 0, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000 (rpm) -

    OK: 

    Tachometer indication is normal  .

    NG: REPLACE COMBINATION METER (See  COMBINATION METER  ) 

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  3. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (ENGINE RPM) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Data List.
    5. Check the values by referring to the table below.

    Combination Meter 

    ITEM RANGE REFERENCE CHART

    Tester Display Measurement Item/Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
    Engine Rpm Engine speed /
    Min.: 0 rpm, Max.: 12750 rpm
    Almost same as actual engine speed (Tachometer indication) If data received from the ECM exceeds the range that can be displayed on the meter, the meter continues to display the maximum value of the range.

    OK: 

    Engine speed displayed on the Techstream is almost the same as the indicated engine speed  .

    NG: Go to step 4 

    OK: REPLACE COMBINATION METER (See  COMBINATION METER  ) 

  4. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (ENGINE SPEED) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream ON.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List.
    5. Check the values by referring to the table below.

    Engine and ECT (for 2AZ-FE)

    Engine Speed Engine speed:
    Min.: 0 rpm, Max.: 16383.75 rpm
    650 to 750 rpm: Idling -

    Engine and ECT (for 2ZR-FE)

    Engine Speed Engine speed:
    Min.: 0 rpm, Max.: 16383.75 rpm
    650 to 750 rpm: Idling (Automatic transaxle) 600 to 700 rpm: Idling (Manual transaxle) -

    OK: 

    Engine speed displayed on the Techstream is almost the same as the indicated engine speed  .

    Result

    OK A
    NG (for 2AZ-FE) B
    NG (for 2ZR-FE) C

    B: GO TO SFI SYSTEM (for 2AZ-FE)  (See HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING )

    C: GO TO SFI SYSTEM (for 2ZR-FE)  (See HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING )

    A: Go to Next Step 

  5. REPLACE ECM 
    1. Replace the ECM with a new or known good one (See REMOVAL for 2AZ-FE, REMOVAL for 2ZR-FE).

      OK: 

      The operation of the tachometer returns to normal  .

      NG: REPLACE COMBINATION METER (See  COMBINATION METER  ) 

      OK: END
