Inspection Procedure

HINT:

If there is an open or short in the engine coolant temperature sensor circuit, the ECM outputs the DTCs. Troubleshoot SFI System (See DTC P0115 ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION; DTC P0117 ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE CIRCUIT LOW INPUT; DTC P0118 ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE CIRCUIT HIGH INPUT for 2AZ-FE, FAIL-SAFE for 2ZR-FE).

  1. CHECK CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
    1. Check if a CAN communication DTC is output (See DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM ).

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (WATER TEMPERATURE METER OPERATION)
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Active Test.
    5. Check the operation by referring to the table below.

    OK:

    Gauge indication is normal  .

NG: REPLACE COMBINATION METER (See  COMBINATION METER  )

    OK: Go to Next Step

  3. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (COOLANT TEMPERATURE)
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Data List.

Coolant Temperature Engine coolant temperature /
    Min.: 0°C (32°F), Max.: 127.5°C (261.5°F)
    After warming up: 80 to 95°C (176 to 203°F)
    • If -40°C (-40°F) or less: Sensor circuit open
    • If 140°C (284°F) or more: Sensor circuit shorted

    OK:

Engine coolant temperature value displayed on the Techstream is almost the same as engine coolant temperature receiver gauge indication  .

NG: REPLACE COMBINATION METER (See  COMBINATION METER  )

    OK: Go to Next Step

  4. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (COOLANT TEMP)
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List.
    5. Check the values by referring to the table below.
