Inspection Procedure
HINT:
Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
- INSPECT COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY (OUTPUT WAVEFORM)
- Remove the combination meter.
- Connect the oscilloscope to terminal E1 -9 (+S) and body ground.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON.
- Turn the wheel slowly.
- Check the signal waveform according to the condition(s) in the table below.WAVEFORM REFERENCE
Item Condition Tool setting 5V/DIV., 20ms/DIV. Vehicle condition Driving at approx. 12 mph (20 km/h) OK:
The waveform is displayed as shown in the illustration.
HINT:
When the system is functioning normally, one wheel revolution generates 4 pulses. As the vehicle speed increases, the width indicated by (A) in the illustration narrows.

OK: Go to next step
- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY - ECM)
- Disconnect the combination meter connector.
- Disconnect the ECM connector.
- Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard Resistance (Check for Open)
TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHARTTester Connection Condition Specified Condition E1-9 (+S) - D60-29 (SPD) Always Below 1 Ω - Reconnect the combination meter connector.
- Reconnect the ECM connector.
NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY - ECM)

OK: REPLACE ECM (See INSPECTION PROCEDURE )
