Parking Brake Assembly: Reassembly

  1. APPLY HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE 
    1. Apply high temperature grease to the backing plate where it contacts the shoe.
  2. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE GUIDE PLATE 
    1. Apply adhesive to the threads of the parking brake shoe guide plate set bolt.

      Adhesive: 

      Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1344, Three Bond 1344 or equivalent 

    2. Install the parking brake shoe guide plate with the parking brake shoe guide plate set bolt.

      Torque: 18 N*m (184 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf)

  3. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER 
    1. Install the parking brake shoe lever and shim to the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly with a new C-washer.

    2. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly and parking brake shoe lever.

      Standard clearance: 

      Less than 0.35 mm (0.014 in.) 

      If the clearance is not as specified, replace the shim with one of the correct size.

      SHIM THICKNESS SPECIFICATIONS

      Shim Thickness Shim Thickness
      0.3 mm (0.012 in.) 0.9 mm (0.035 in.)
      0.6 mm (0.024 in.) -

  4. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Using needle-nose pliers, connect the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly to the parking brake shoe lever.

    2. Install the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly with the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 2 pin, the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 2 cup, the parking brake shoe hold down spring and the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 1 cup.
    3. Engage the claw of the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 2 cup to the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly.

  5. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET 
    1. Apply high temperature grease to the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set as shown in the illustration.

    2. Install the parking brake shoe return tension No. 2 spring to the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly and the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly.
    3. Install the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set to the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly and the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly.

  6. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly with the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 1 pin, parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 2 cup, parking brake shoe hold down spring and parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 1 cup.
    2. Engage the claw of the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 2 cup to the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly.

  7. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT 
    1. Attach the parking brake shoe strut and the parking brake shoe strut compression spring to the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly and No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly.
  8. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN TENSION NO. 1 SPRING 
    1. Using needle-nose pliers, install the 2 parking brake shoe return tension No. 1 springs.

      HINT:

      First install the front side spring and then the rear side spring.

  9. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE INSTALLATION 
    1. Check that each part is installed properly.

      NOTE: There should be no oil or grease on the friction surfaces of the shoe linings and discs.
  10. INSTALL REAR DISC 
    1. Align the matchmarks and install the rear disc.
  11. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING HOLE PLUG 
    1. Install the parking brake shoe adjusting hole plug.
  12. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE 
    1. Temporarily install the hub nuts.
    2. Remove the shoe adjusting hole plug.

    3. Turn the adjuster and expand the shoes until the disc locks.
    4. Contract the shoe adjuster until the disc rotates smoothly.

      Standard: 

      Returns 8 notches 

    5. Check that the disc has no brake drag.
    6. Install the shoe adjusting hole plug.

  13. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the rear disc brake caliper assembly with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 62 N*m (632 kgf*cm, 46 ft.*lbf) 

  14. INSTALL REAR WHEEL 

    Torque: 103 N*m (1050 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf)

  15. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL  (See ADJUSTMENT  )
  16. BED IN PARKING BRAKE SHOES TO DISCS 
    1. Drive the vehicle at about 50 km/h (31 mph) on a safe, level and dry road.
    2. Depress the parking brake pedal with 150 N (15 kgf, 34 lbf) of force.
    3. Drive the vehicle about 400 m (0.25 miles) in this condition.
    4. Repeat this procedure 3 times.
      NOTE: Use 5-minute intervals between each procedure to prevent the parking brake assembly from overheating.
  17. REMOVE REAR WHEEL 
  18. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE 
    1. Temporarily install the hub nuts.
    2. Remove the shoe adjusting hole plug.
    3. Turn the adjuster and expand the shoes until the disc locks.
    4. Contract the shoe adjuster until the disc rotates smoothly.

      Standard: 

      Returns 8 notches 

    5. Check that the disc has no brake drag.
    6. Install the shoe adjusting hole plug.

  19. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL  (See ADJUSTMENT  )
  20. INSTALL REAR WHEEL 

    Torque: 103 N*m (1050 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf)
