Inspection Procedure

HINT:

Read freeze frame data using a Techstream. Freeze frame data record the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data, from the time the malfunction occurred.

  1. INSPECT IGNITION COIL (POWER SOURCE) 
    1. Disconnect the ignition coil connector.

    3. Check the resistance.

      Standard resistance (Check for open) 

      TESTER CONNECTIONS SPECIFIED CONDITIONS CHART

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      GND (C11-4) - Body ground Below 1 Ω
      GND (C12-4) - Body ground
      GND (C13-4) - Body ground
      GND (C14-4) - Body ground
    4. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    5. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the wire harness side connector.

      Standard voltage 

      TESTER CONNECTIONS SPECIFIED CONDITIONS CHART

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      +B (C11-1) - GND (C11-4) 11 to 14 V
      +B (C12-1) - GND (C12-4)
      +B (C13-1) - GND (C13-4)
      +B (C14-1) - GND (C14-4)
    6. Reconnect the ignition coil connector.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  2. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY - ECM) 
    1. Disconnect the ignition coil connector.
    2. Disconnect the C20 ECM connector.

    4. Check the resistance.

      Standard resistance (Check for open) 

      TESTER CONNECTIONS SPECIFIED CONDITIONS CHART

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      IGF (C11-2) - IGF1 (C20-81) Below 1 Ω
      IGF (C12-2) - IGF1 (C20-81)
      IGF (C13-2) - IGF1 (C20-81)
      IGF (C14-2) - IGF1 (C20-81)

      Standard resistance (Check for open) 

      TESTER CONNECTIONS SPECIFIED CONDITIONS CHART

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      IGT (C11-3) - IGT1 (C20-85) Below 1 Ω
      IGT2 (C12-3) - IGT2 (C20-84)
      IGT3 (C13-3) - IGT3 (C20-83)
      IGT4 (C14-3) - IGT4 (C20-82)

      Standard resistance (Check for short) 

      TESTER CONNECTIONS SPECIFIED CONDITIONS CHART

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      IGF (C11-2) or IGF1 (C20-81) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      IGF (C12-2) or IGF1 (C20-81) - Body ground
      IGF (C13-2) or IGF1 (C20-81) - Body ground
      IGF (C14-2) or IGF1 (C20-81) - Body ground

      Standard resistance (Check for short) 

      TESTER CONNECTIONS SPECIFIED CONDITIONS CHART

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      IGT (C11-3) or IGT1 (C20-85) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      IGT2 (C12-3) or IGT2 (C20-84) - Body ground
      IGT3 (C13-3) or IGT3 (C20-83) - Body ground
      IGT4 (C14-3) or IGT4 (C20-82) - Body ground
    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.
    6. Reconnect the ignition coil connector.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0351, P0352, P0353 OR P0354) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester ON.
    3. Clear DTCs (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR  ).
    4. Shuffle arrangement of the ignition coils (among No. 1 to No. 4 cylinders).
      NOTE: Do not shuffle the connectors.
    5. Perform a simulation test.
    6. Check DTCs displayed on the tester.

      Result 

      RESULT CHART

      Display (DTC Output) Proceed To
      Same DTC output A
      Different ignition coil DTC output B

    B: REPLACE IGNITION COIL  (See REMOVAL )

    A: REPLACE ECM (See  REMOVAL   )
