Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Toyota Yaris. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

HINT:

  1. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (ENGINE SPEED)
    1. Connect a Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the tester ON.
    4. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Engine Speed.
    5. Start the engine.
    6. Read the values displayed on the tester while the engine is running.

      Standard:

      Correct values are displayed.

      HINT:

      • To check the engine speed change, display the graph on the tester.
      • If the engine does not start, check the engine speed while cranking.
      • If the engine speed indicated on the tester remains zero (0), there may be an open or short in the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor circuit.

OK: CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS (See  CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS   )

    NG: Go to next step

  2. INSPECT CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (RESISTANCE)
    1. Disconnect the C2 CKP sensor connector.
    2. Fig 1: Identifying CKP Sensor Connector Terminals

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      1 - 2 1150 to 1450 Ω at 25°C (77°F)
    4. Reconnect the CKP sensor connector.

NG: REPLACE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (See  REMOVAL   )

    OK: Go to next step

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR - ECM)
    1. Disconnect the C2 CKP sensor connector.
    2. Fig 2: Identifying C2 CKP Sensor And C20 ECM Connector Terminals

NE- (C2-2) or NE- (C20-121) - Body ground
    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.
    6. Reconnect the CKP sensor connector.

NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

    OK: Go to next step

  4. CHECK SENSOR INSTALLATION (CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR)
    1. Check the CKP sensor installation.

      OK:

      Sensor is installed correctly.

NG: SECURELY REINSTALL SENSOR (See  REMOVAL   )

    OK: Go to next step

  5. INSPECT CRANKSHAFT (TEETH OF SENSOR PLATE)
    1. Check the teeth of the sensor plate.

      OK:

Sensor plate does not have any cracks or deformation.

NG: REPLACE CRANKSHAFT  (See DISASSEMBLY )

    OK: Go to next step

  6. REPLACE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
    1. Replace the crankshaft position sensor (See REMOVAL  ).
  7. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0335 OR P0339)
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the tester ON.
    4. Clear DTCs (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR  ).
    5. Start the engine.
    6. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
    7. Read DTCs.
