Inspection Procedure
HINT:
| Abnormal bank | Advanced timing over (Valve timing is out of specified range) | Retarded timing over (Valve timing is out of specified range) |
|---|---|---|
| Bank 1 | P0011 | P0012 |
| Bank 2 | P0021 | P0022 |
- If DTC P0011 or P0012 is displayed, check the bank 1 VVT system circuit.
- Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes cylinder No. 1.
- If DTC P0021 or P0022 is displayed, check the bank 2 VVT system circuit.
- Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include cylinder No. 1.
- Read freeze frame data using a Techstream. Freeze frame data record the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
- CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022)
- Connect a Techstream to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch ON and turn the tester ON.
- Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
- Read DTCs.

RESULT CHARTDisplay (DTC Output) Proceed To P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 A P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 and other DTCs B HINT:
If any DTCs other than P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.
B: GO TO DTC CHART (See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART )
A: Go to next step
- PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OPERATE OCV)
- Connect a Techstream to the DLC3.
- Start the engine and turn the tester ON.
- Warm up the engine.
- Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1) or Control the VVT System (Bank 2).
- Check the engine speed while operating the Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the tester.
OK

- CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022)
- Connect a Techstream to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch ON and turn the tester ON.
- Clear DTCs (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR ).
- Start the engine and warm it up.
- Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the tester (See CHECK MODE PROCEDURE ).
- Drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.
- Read DTCs using the tester.
OK: No DTC output.
OK: END
NG: Go to Next Step
- CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN)
- Remove the cylinder head cover (See REMOVAL ).
- Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with the timing mark "0" of the timing chain cover.
- Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing gears are aligned with the timing marks of the bearing cap as shown in the illustration.
If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°), then align the marks as above.
OK: Timing marks on camshaft timing gears are aligned as shown in the illustration.
- Reinstall the cylinder head cover (See INSTALLATION ).
NG: ADJUST VALVE TIMING
OK: Go to Next Step
- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (OCV)
- Remove the OCV.
- Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard Resistance
TESTER CONNECTIONS SPECIFIED CONDITIONS CHARTTester Connections Specified Conditions 1 - 2 6.9 to 7.9 Ω at 20°C (68°F) - Apply the positive battery voltage to terminal 1 and negative battery voltage to terminal 2. Check the valve operation.
OK: Valve moves quickly.
- Reinstall the OCV.

NG: REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (See REMOVAL )
OK: Go to Next Step
- INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER
OK: Filter is not clogged.
NG: CLEAN OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER
OK: Go to Next Step
- REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY
NEXT:
- CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS
- Connect a Techstream to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch ON and turn the tester ON.
- Clear DTCs (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR ).
- Start the engine and warm it up.
- Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the tester (See CHECK MODE PROCEDURE ).
- Drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.
- Confirm that no DTC is set using the tester.
OK: No DTC output.
HINT:
DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is output when foreign objects in engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will stay registered even if the system returns to normal after a short time. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem.
OK: SYSTEM OK
NG: REPLACE ECM (See REMOVAL )
