Automatic Transaxle Assembly: Installation

  1. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the torque converter clutch to the automatic transaxle assembly.
    2. Using vernier calipers, measure dimension "A" between the transaxle fitting part of the engine and the converter fitting part of the drive plate (procedure "I").

    3. Using vernier calipers and a straight edge, measure dimension "B" shown in the illustration and check that "B" is greater than "A" measured in procedure "I".

      Standard: 

      A + 1 mm (0.04 in.) or more 

      NOTE: Remember to subtract the thickness of the straight edge.

  2. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the automatic transaxle assembly to the engine with the 6 bolts.

      Torque: 

      Bolt A 

      64 N*m (653 kgf*cm, 47 ft.*lbf) 

      Bolt B 

      46 N*m (469 kgf*cm, 34 ft.*lbf) 

      Bolt C 

      23 N*m (235 kgf*cm, 17 ft.*lbf)

    2. Install the 6 torque converter mounting bolts.

      Torque: 28 N*m (286 kgf*cm, 21 ft.*lbf) 

      HINT:

      First install the yellowish green colored bolt and then the remaining 5 bolts.

  3. INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER 
  4. INSTALL REAR ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET 
    1. Install the rear engine mounting bracket to the automatic transaxle assembly with the 3 bolts.

      Torque: 64 N*m (653 kgf*cm, 47 ft.*lbf)

  5. INSTALL FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET 
    1. Install the front engine mounting bracket to the automatic transaxle assembly with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 64 N*m (653 kgf*cm, 47 ft.*lbf)

  6. INSTALL CENTER ENGINE MOUNTING MEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the dynamic damper, center engine mounting member sub-assembly with front engine mounting insulator with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 

      Bolt A 

      52 N*m (530 kgf*cm, 38 ft.*lbf) 

      Bolt B 

      60 N*m (612 kgf*cm, 44 ft.*lbf)

    2. Install the front engine mounting insulator to the front engine mounting bracket with the bolt and nut.

      Torque: 52 N*m (530 kgf cm, 38 ft.*lbf)

  7. INSTALL REAR ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR 
    1. Install the rear engine mounting insulator to the rear engine mounting bracket with the bolt.

      Torque: 65 N*m (663 kgf*cm, 48 ft.*lbf)

    2. Tighten the 3 nuts and bolt.

      Torque: 52 N*m (530 kgf*cm, 38 ft.*lbf)

  8. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET LH 
    1. Install the engine mounting bracket LH to the automatic transaxle assembly with the 3 bolts.

      Torque: 52 N*m (530 kgf*cm, 38 ft.*lbf)

  9. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR LH 
    1. Install the engine mounting insulator to the body LH with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 52 N*m (530 kgf*cm, 38 ft.*lbf)

    2. Install the engine mounting insulator LH to the engine mounting bracket LH with the through bolt and nut.

      Torque: 80 N*m (816 kgf*cm, 59 ft.*lbf)

  10. INSTALL STARTER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the starter with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 39 N*m (398 kgf*cm, 29 ft.*lbf)

    2. Connect the starter connector.
    3. Install the starter wire and nut.

      Torque: 13 N*m (133 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf) 

    4. Close the terminal cover.
  11. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CASE PROTECTOR 
    1. Install the case protector with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 18 N*m (184 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf) 

  12. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY LH  (See INSTALLATION )
  13. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY RH  (See INSTALLATION )
  14. INSTALL FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  15. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER LH 
  16. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER RH 
  17. INSTALL FRONT WHEELS 

    Torque: 103 N*m (1050 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf) 

  18. INSTALL OXYGEN SENSOR CONNECTOR 
    1. Connect the oxygen sensor connector.
    2. Install the floor carpet and foot rest.
  19. INSTALL TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Temporarily install the No. 1 oil cooler outlet tube.
    2. Temporarily install the No. 1 oil cooler inlet tube.
    3. Coat a new O-ring with ATF, and install it to the oil filler tube sub-assembly.
    4. Install the oil filler tube sub-assembly to the automatic transaxle assembly.
    5. Install the oil cooler tube clamp with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 5.5 N*m (56 kgf*cm, 49 in.*lbf)

    6. Install the ATF level gauge.
  20. INSTALL NO. 1 OIL COOLER OUTLET TUBE 
    1. Using SST, tighten the No. 1 oil cooler outlet tube.

      SST 09023-38400 

      Torque: 

      For use without SST 

      35 N*m (357 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf) 

      For use with SST 

      32 N*m (326 kgf*cm, 24 ft.*lbf) 

  21. INSTALL NO. 1 OIL COOLER INLET TUBE 
    1. Using SST, tighten the No. 1 oil cooler inlet tube.

      SST 09023-38400 

      Torque: 

      For use without SST 

      35 N*m (357 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf) 

      For use with SST 

      32 N*m (326 kgf*cm, 24 ft.*lbf)

  22. CONNECT CONNECTOR 
    1. Connect the transmission wire connector.
    2. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    3. w/o ABS:

      Connect the speedometer sensor connector.

  23. INSTALL WIRE HARNESS 
    1. Install the wire harness clamp bracket with the bolt.

      Torque: 13 N*m (133 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf)

    2. Install the wire harness clamp bracket and 2 wire harnesses with the 3 bolts.

      Torque: 

      Bolt A 

      26 N*m (265 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf) 

      Bolt B 

      10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) 

      Bolt C 

      13 N*m (133 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf)

  24. INSTALL NO. 1 TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET 
    1. Install the control cable bracket with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 12 N*m (122 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf) 

  25. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE SUPPORT 
    1. Install the control cable support with the bolt.

      Torque: 12 N*m (122 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf)

    2. Connect the control cable and wire harness to the control cable support.
  26. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Temporarily install the control cable to the control shaft lever with the nut.

    2. Install the control cable and a new clip to the bracket.
  27. INSTALL BATTERY CARRIER 
    1. Install the battery carrier with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 13 N*m (133 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf)

  28. INSTALL BATTERY 
  29. INSTALL AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY WITH HOSE 

    Torque: 7.0 N*m (71 kgf*cm, 62 in.*lbf) 

  30. INSTALL NO. 2 CYLINDER HEAD COVER 

    Torque: 7.0 N*m (71 kgf*cm, 62 in.*lbf) 

  31. INSTALL HOOD SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    Torque: 13 N*m (133 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf) 

  32. INSPECT HOOD SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See ADJUSTMENT )
  33. ADJUST HOOD SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See ADJUSTMENT )
  34. ADD AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID 

    Fluid type: 

    T-IV 

    Capacity: 

    3.0 liters (3.2 US qts, 2.6 lmp.qts) 

  35. INSPECT AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID 

    HINT:

    See ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION 

  36. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION  (See ADJUSTMENT  )
  37. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION  (See ADJUSTMENT  )
  38. INSPECT FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT 

    HINT:

  39. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL (w/ABS)
