Power Steering Gear: Removal

  1. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  2. SEPARATE CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 

    (See AIRBAG SYSTEM )

  3. REMOVE FRONT WHEELS 
  4. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER NO.2 
  5. SEPARATE FRONT STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY LH  (See REMOVAL )
  6. SEPARATE FRONT STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY RH 

    HINT:

    Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

  7. SEPARATE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Fix the steering wheel with the seat belt in order to prevent rotation.

      HINT:

      This operation is useful to prevent damage to the spiral cable.

    2. Loosen the bolt and remove the clamp from the steering column hole shield.

    3. Remove the bolt, and then slide the steering intermediate shaft assembly.

      NOTE: Do not separate the steering intermediate shaft assembly.
    4. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly and the power steering link assembly.

    5. Separate the steering intermediate shaft assembly from the power steering link assembly.
  8. SEPARATE TIE ROD ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the cotter pin and the nut.
    2. Using SST, separate the tie rod assembly (LH side) from the steering knuckle.

      NOTE:
      • Hang SST with a string, etc. to prevent it from falling.
      • Do not damage the front disc brake dust cover.
      • Do not damage the ball joint dust cover.
      • Do not damage the steering knuckle.
    3. Separate the RH side by using the same procedure as for the LH side.
  9. REMOVE ENGINE ASSEMBLY WITH TRANSAXLE 

    HINT:

    Refer to the instructions for removal of the engine assembly (See REMOVAL ).

  10. REMOVE POWER STEERING LINK ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts, and the power steering link assembly from the front frame assembly.
