Inspection Procedure
HINT:
Read freeze frame data using an intelligent tester. Freeze frame data record the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data, from the time the malfunction occurred.
- CHECK SPARK PLUG AND SPARK OF MISFIRING CYLINDER
- Check the spark plug and sparks of the misfiring cylinder (See ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION ).
NG: Go to step 4
OK: Go TO NEXT STEP
- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY - ECM (IGF1 SIGNAL TERMINAL))
- Disconnect the B5, B6, B7, B20, B23 or B24 ignition coil with igniter connector.
- Disconnect the B1 ECM connector.
- Check the resistance.
Standard Resistance (Check for open)
TESTER CONNECTIONS AND SPECIFIED CONDITIONSTester Connections Specified Conditions IGF (B7-2) - IGF1 (B1-24) Below 1 Ω IGF (B24-2) - IGF1 (B1-24) IGF (B6-2) - IGF1 (B1-24) IGF (B23-2) - IGF1 (B1-24) IGF (B5-2) - IGF1 (B1-24) IGF (B20-2) - IGF1 (B1-24) Standard Resistance (Check for short)
TESTER CONNECTIONS AND SPECIFIED CONDITIONSTester Connections Specified Conditions IGF (B7-2) or IGF1 (B1-24) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher IGF (B24-2) or IGF1 (B1-24) - Body ground IGF (B6-2) or IGF1 (B1-24) - Body ground IGF (B23-2) or IGF1 (B1-24) - Body ground IGF (B5-2) or IGF1 (B1-24) - Body ground IGF (B20-2) or IGF1 (B1-24) - Body ground - Reconnect the ECM connector.
- Reconnect the ignition coil with igniter connector.
NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK: Go TO NEXT STEP
- INSPECT ECM (IGF1 VOLTAGE)
- Disconnect the ignition coil connector.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Measure the voltage between the terminals of the B1 and B3 ECM connectors.
Standard Voltage
STANDARD VOLTAGE SPECIFICATIONSTester Connection Specified Condition IGF1 (B1-24) - E1 (B3-1) 4.5 to 5.5 V - Reconnect the ignition coil connector.
NG: REPLACE ECM (See REMOVAL )
OK: REPLACE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY
- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY - ECM (IGT SIGNAL TERMINAL))
- Disconnect the B5, B6, B7, B20, B23 or B24 ignition coil with igniter connector.
- Disconnect the B1 ECM connector.
- Check the resistance.
Standard Resistance (Check for open)
TESTER CONNECTIONS AND SPECIFIED CONDITIONSTester Connections Specified Conditions: IGT1 (B7-3) - IGT1 (B1-8) Below 1 Ω IGT2 (B24-3) - IGT2 (B1-9) IGT3 (B6-3) - IGT3 (B1 -10) IGT4 (B23-3) - IGT4 (B1-11) IGT5 (B5-3) - IGT5 (B1-12) IGT6 (B20-3) - IGT6 (B1-13) Standard Resistance (Check for short)
TESTER CONNECTIONS AND SPECIFIED CONDITIONSTester Connections Specified Conditions IGT1 (B7-3) or IGT1 (B1-8) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher IGT2 (B24-3) or IGT2 (B1-9) - Body ground IGT3 (B6-3) or IGT3 (B1-10) - Body ground IGT4 (B23-3) or IGT4 (B1-11) - Body ground IGT5 (B5-3) or IGT5 (B1-12) - Body ground IGT6 (B20-3) or IGT6 (B1-13) - Body ground - Reconnect the ECM connector.
- Reconnect the ignition coil with igniter connector.
NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK: Go TO NEXT STEP
- INSPECT ECM (IGT1, IGT2, IGT3, IGT4, IGT5, OR IGT6 VOLTAGE)
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Measure the voltage between the terminals of the B1 and B3 ECM connectors.
Standard Voltage

NG: REPLACE ECM (See REMOVAL )
OK: Go TO NEXT STEP
- INSPECT ECM (IGT1, IGT2, IGT3, IGT4, IGT5, OR IGT6 VOLTAGE)
- Disconnect the B5, B6, B7, B20, B23 or B24 ignition coil connector.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Measure the voltage between the terminals of the B1 and B3 ECM connectors.
Standard Voltage
STANDARD VOLTAGE SPECIFICATIONSTester Connections Specified Conditions IGT1 (B1-8) - E1 (B3-1) 4.5 V or more IGT2 (B1-9) - E1 (B3-1) IGT3 (B1-10) - E1 (B3-1) IGT4 (B1-11) - E1 (B3-1) IGT5 (B1-12) - E1 (B3-1) IGT6 (B1-13) - E1 (B3-1) - Reconnect the ignition coil connector.
NG: Go to step 8
OK: Go TO NEXT STEP
- INSPECT IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY (POWER SOURCE)
- Disconnect the B5, B6, B7, B20, B23 or B24 ignition coil with igniter connector.
- Check the resistance.
Standard Resistance (Check for open)
TESTER CONNECTIONS AND SPECIFIED CONDITIONSTester Connections Specified Conditions GND (B7-4) - Body ground Below 1 Ω GND (B24-4) - Body ground GND (B6-4) - Body ground GND (B23-4) - Body ground GND (B5-4) - Body ground GND (B20-4) - Body ground - Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Measure the voltage between the terminals of the wire harness side connector.
Standard Voltage
STANDARD VOLTAGE SPECIFICATIONSTester Connections Specified Conditions +B (B7-1) - GND (B7-4) 11 to 14 V +B (B24-1) - GND (B24-4) +B (B6-1) - GND (B6-4) +B (B23-1) - GND (B23-4) +B (B5-1) - GND (B5-4) +B (B20-1) - GND (B20-4) - Reconnect the ignition coil with igniter connector.
OK: REPLACE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY
NG: Go TO NEXT STEP
- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY - IGNITION SWITCH)
- Disconnect the B5, B6, B7, B20, B23 or B24 ignition coil with igniter connector.
- Disconnect the A1 ignition switch connector.
- Check the resistance.
Standard Resistance (Check for open)
