OBD II scan tool (excluding the hand-held tester):

  1. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSY (FOR VVTL) 
    1. Start the engine.
    2. Check the engine speed twice in each of conditions (1) and (2), as described below:
      1. Disconnect the C2 camshaft timing OCV (Oil Control Valve) connector.
      2. Apply the positive battery voltage between the terminals of the camshaft timing OCV.

        Result: 

        CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSY (FOR VVTL) INSPECTION RESULT

        Condition (1) Condition (2) Proceed To
        Normal engine speed Engine idles roughly or stalls A
        Any results other than above Any results other than above B
      3. Reconnect the camshaft timing OCV connector.

    1. B: REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSY 
    2. A: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  2. INSPECT ECM (VVL+ - VVL- VOLTAGE) 
    1. Start the engine and warm it up.
    2. Measure the voltage between terminals VVL+ and VVL- of the ECM connector.

      Standard: Between 9 V and 14 V 

      (Engine speed at 6,500 rpm or more)

    1. NG: REPLACE ECM (See  ECM (1ZZ-FE/2ZZ-GE) REPLACEMENT  ) 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (OCV FOR VVTL - ECM) 
    1. Disconnect the C15 control valve connector.
    2. Disconnect the E3 and E4 ECM connectors.
    3. Check the resistance.

      Standard (Check for open): 

      OCV FOR VVTL - ECM RESISTANCE (CHECK FOR OPEN)

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      OCV (C15-1) - VVL+ (E4-17) Below 1 Ω
      OCV (C15-2) - VVL- (E4-16) Below 1 Ω

      Standard (Check for short): 

      OCV FOR VVTL - ECM RESISTANCE (CHECK FOR SHORT)

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      OCV (C15-1) or VVL+ (E4-17) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      OCV (C15-2) or VVL- (E4-16) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Reconnect the OCV connector.
    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 

      REPLACE ECM (See  ECM (1ZZ-FE/2ZZ-GE) REPLACEMENT  )
