Hand-held tester:
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
- PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING HAND-HELD TESTER (CHECK CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSY for VVTL)
- Connect a hand-held tester to the DLC 3.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester ON.
- Start the engine and warm it up.
- Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / ACTIVE TEST / VVTL CTR B1.
- Maintain the engine speed at between 1,500 rpm and 2,500 rpm.
- Check the engine speed when operating the OCV (Oil Control Valve) for VVTL using the tester.
Result:
VVTL system OFF (OCV: OFF): Normal engine speed
VVTL system ON (OCV: ON): Engine idles roughly or stalls
- OK: REPLACE ECM (See ECM (1ZZ-FE/2ZZ-GE) REPLACEMENT )
- NG: GO TO NEXT STEP
- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSY (FOR VVTL)
- Start the engine.
- Check the engine speed twice in each of conditions (1) and (2), as described below:
- Disconnect the C2 camshaft timing OCV connector.
- Apply the positive battery voltage between the terminals of the camshaft timing OCV.
Result:

- INSPECT ECM (VVL+ - VVL- VOLTAGE)
- Start the engine and warm it up.
- Measure the voltage between terminals VVL+ and VVL- of the ECM connector.
Standard: Between 9 V and 14 V
(Engine speed at 6,500 rpm or more)
- NG: REPLACE ECM (See ECM (1ZZ-FE/2ZZ-GE) REPLACEMENT )

- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (OCV FOR VVTL - ECM)
- Disconnect the C15 OCV connector.
- Disconnect the E3 and E4 ECM connectors.
- Check the resistance.
