Hand-held tester:

  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING HAND-HELD TESTER (CHECK CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSY for VVTL) 
    1. Connect a hand-held tester to the DLC 3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester ON.
    3. Start the engine and warm it up.
    4. Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / ACTIVE TEST / VVTL CTR B1.
    5. Maintain the engine speed at between 1,500 rpm and 2,500 rpm.
    6. Check the engine speed when operating the OCV (Oil Control Valve) for VVTL using the tester.

      Result: 

      VVTL system OFF (OCV: OFF): Normal engine speed 

      VVTL system ON (OCV: ON): Engine idles roughly or stalls 

    1. OK: REPLACE ECM (See  ECM (1ZZ-FE/2ZZ-GE) REPLACEMENT  ) 
    2. NG: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSY (FOR VVTL) 
    1. Start the engine.
    2. Check the engine speed twice in each of conditions (1) and (2), as described below:
      1. Disconnect the C2 camshaft timing OCV connector.
      2. Apply the positive battery voltage between the terminals of the camshaft timing OCV.

        Result: 

        CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSY (FOR VVTL) INSPECTION RESULT

        Condition (1) Condition (2) Proceed To
        Normal engine speed Engine idles roughly or stalls A
        Any results other than above Any results other than above B

      3. Reconnect the camshaft timing OCV connector.
    1. B: REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSY 
    2. A: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  3. INSPECT ECM (VVL+ - VVL- VOLTAGE) 
    1. Start the engine and warm it up.
    2. Measure the voltage between terminals VVL+ and VVL- of the ECM connector.

      Standard: Between 9 V and 14 V 

      (Engine speed at 6,500 rpm or more)

    1. NG: REPLACE ECM (See  ECM (1ZZ-FE/2ZZ-GE) REPLACEMENT  ) 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (OCV FOR VVTL - ECM) 
    1. Disconnect the C15 OCV connector.
    2. Disconnect the E3 and E4 ECM connectors.
    3. Check the resistance.

      Standard (Check for open): 

      OCV FOR VVTL - ECM RESISTANCE (CHECK FOR OPEN)

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      OCV (C15-1) - VVL+ (E4-17) Below 1 Ω
      OCV (C15-2) - VVL- (E4-16) Below 1 Ω
      E2 (E3-28) - Body ground Below 1 Ω

      Standard (Check for short): 

      OCV FOR VVTL - ECM RESISTANCE (CHECK FOR SHORT)

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      OCV (C15-1) or VVL+ (E4-17) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      OCV (C15-2) or VVL- (E4-16) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Reconnect the OCV connector.
    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 

      REPLACE ECM (See  ECM (1ZZ-FE/2ZZ-GE) REPLACEMENT  )
