Hand-held tester:

HINT:

It is possible to check the pressure in the secondary air passage using a hand-held tester.

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P2440 AND/OR P2441) 
    1. Connect a hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester ON.
    3. Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DTC INFO / CURRENT CODES.
    4. Read DTCs.

      Result: 

      DTC OUTPUT RESULT

      Display (DTC output) Proceed To
      P2440 and/or P2441 A
      P2440 and/or P2441, and other DTCs B

      HINT:

      If any DTCs other than P2440 and/or P2441 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

    1. B: GO TO  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART  
    2. A: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING HAND-HELD TESTER (VSV FOR SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SYSTEM) 
    1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester ON.
    3. Disconnect air injection system hose No. 6.
    4. Start the engine.
    5. On the tester, select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / ACTIVE TEST/ SECOND AIR VSV / ALL or USER DATA.
      NOTE: When selecting USER DATA, select SECONDARY AIR and SECOND AIR VSV on the tester screen by pressing the YES button on the tester.

      HINT:

      When operating the Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV) in the secondary air system, the air pump is also operated simultaneously.

    6. Put your hand near the disconnected end of the hose and check that the exhaust gas pressure pulsates when the VSV for air switching valve is turned ON during the ACTIVE TEST.
    7. Check that the exhaust gas does not pulsate when the VSV for air switching valve is switched OFF.
      NOTE: This test only allows technicians to operate the VSV for 5 seconds. If the test is repeated, intervals of at least 30 seconds are required between tests.

      HINT:

      SECONDARY AIR denotes the signal transmitted by the ECM to operate the air pump.

    8. Reconnect air injection system hose No. 6.
    1. OK: Go to step   9 
    2. NG: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  3. CHECK AIR INJECTION SYSTEM NO.1 HOSE 
    1. Check that air injection hose No.1 is securely connected to both the exhaust manifold and the air switching valve.
    2. Inspect air injection hose No.1 for blockages and damage.
    1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE AIR INJECTION SYSTEM NO.1 HOSE 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  4. CHECK STORED DTCS 
    1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester ON.
    3. Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DTC INFO / CURRENT CODES.
    4. Read DTCs.

      P2441 B
    1. a: Go to step   6 
    2. B: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  5. INSPECT VACUUM HOSE AND CHECK VALVE 
    1. Check the connections of the vacuum hoses between each of the following:
      1. The pressure sensor and the air switching valve.
      2. The air switching valve and the VSV.
      3. The VSV and the intake manifold.
    2. Inspect each vacuum hose for blockages and damage.
    3. Check that the check valve is correctly installed.
    4. Check that air flows though the check valve from the VSV to the engine, but not in the opposite direction.

    1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE VACUUM HOSE AND CHECK VALVE 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  6. INSPECT AIR SWITCHING VALVE ASSY (See  INSPECTION  ) 
    1. NG: REPLACE AIR SWITCHING VALVE ASSY 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  7. INSPECT VACUUM SWITCHING VALVE ASSY (See  INSPECTION  ) 
    1. NG: REPLACE VACUUM SWITCHING VALVE ASSY 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  8. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ECM-VACUUM SWITCHING VALVE FOR SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SYSTEM) 
    1. Disconnect the V5 VSV connector.
    2. Disconnect the E6 ECM connector.
    3. Check the resistance.

      Standard (Check for open): 

      ECM-VACUUM SWITCHING VALVE FOR SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SYSTEM RESISTANCE (CHECK FOR OPEN)

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      VSV (V5-2) - AIRV (E6-4) Below 1 Ω

      Standard (Check for short): 

      ECM-VACUUM SWITCHING VALVE FOR SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SYSTEM RESISTANCE (CHECK FOR SHORT)

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      VSV (V5-2) or AIRV (E6-4) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Reconnect the VSV connector.
    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  9. INSPECT ECM (AIR VOLTAGE) 
    1. Connect a pressure gauge to the pressure sensor as shown in the illustration.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (do not start engine).
    3. Check for voltage change between terminals AIP and E2 of the ECM connector when the pressure is applied to the pressure sensor using the pressure gauge.

    1. NG: REPLACE PRESSURE SENSOR (TURBO PRESSURE SENSOR) 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 

      REPLACE ECM (See  ECM (1ZZ-FE/2ZZ-GE) REPLACEMENT  )
