Inspection Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
HINT:
The pressure condition of the secondary air passage can be checked using a hand-held tester.
- Connect a hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester ON.
- Start the engine.
- On the tester, select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / ACTIVE TEST / SECOND AIR VSV / ALL or USER DATA.NOTE: When selecting USER DATA, select SECONDARY AIR and SECOND AIR VSV on the tester screen by pressing the YES button on the tester.
HINT:
When the Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV) of the secondary air system is operated, the air pump operates simultaneously.
- Check that the SECONDARY AIR and SECOND AIR VSV, displayed on the tester, indicate the conditions shown in the table below.NOTE: This test only allows technicians to operate the VSV for 5 seconds. If the test is repeated, intervals of at least 30 seconds are required between tests.SECONDARY AIR and SECOND AIR VSV INSPECTION
Tester Operations SECONDARY AIR ((1)) SECOND AIR VSV ((2)) VSV: ON ON ON VSV: OFF OFF OFF (1) Denotes the signal transmitted by the ECM to operate the air pump. (2) Denotes the signal transmitted by the ECM to operate the VSV. HINT:
- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (PRESSURE SENSOR - ECM)
- Disconnect the A23 pressure sensor connector.
- Disconnect the E3 and E5 ECM connectors.
- Check the resistance.

Standard (Check for short):
PRESSURE SENSOR - ECM RESISTANCE (CHECK FOR SHORT)Tester Connections Specified Conditions Pressure sensor (A23-2) or AIP (E5-34) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher Pressure sensor (A23-3) or VC (E3-18) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher - Reconnect the pressure sensor connector.
- Reconnect the ECM connector.
- NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR
- OK: GO TO NEXT STEP
- INSPECT ECM (AIP VOLTAGE)
- Connect a pressure gauge to the air pressure sensor as shown in the illustration.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (do not start engine).
- Check for voltage change between terminals AIP and E2 of the ECM connector when the pressure is applied to the pressure sensor using the pressure gauge.
