Inspection Procedure

HINT: Read freeze frame data using a hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool. Freeze frame data record the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
- CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN) (See VALVE CLEARANCE (2ZZ-GE)
)
- Remove the cylinder head cover (see VALVE CLEARANCE (2ZZ-GE) ).
- Turn the crankshaft pulley, then align its groove with the timing mark "0" on the timing chain cover.
- Check that the point marks of the camshaft timing gears are as shown in the illustration.
If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°), then align the marks as above.
OK: The point marks on the camshaft timing gears are as shown in the illustration.
- Reinstall the cylinder head cover (see VALVE CLEARANCE (2ZZ-GE) ).
- NG: ADJUST VALVE TIMING (See VALVE CLEARANCE (2ZZ-GE) ) (REPAIR OR REPLACE TIMING CHAIN)
- OK: GO TO NEXT STEP
REPLACE ECM (See ECM (1ZZ-FE/2ZZ-GE) REPLACEMENT )
After replacing the ECM or adjusting intake valve timing, confirm that the DTC output does not recur.
- Connect a hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON.
- Turn the tester or scan tool ON.
- Clear DTCs.
- If using a hand-held tester, switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode (see CHECK MODE PROCEDURE ).
- Start the engine and warm it up.
- Allow the engine to idle for 1 minute or more, and then drive the vehicle for 1 minute or more.
- If using an OBD II scan tool, turn the ignition switch to OFF, and then repeat steps (f) and (g) above.
- Confirm that no DTC is set, using the tester or scan tool.
