OBD II scan tool (excluding the hand-held tester):

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO  DTC P0011, P0012: CAMSHAFT POSITION "A" -TIMING OVER-ADVANCED OR SYSTEM PERFORMANCE/TIMING OVER-RETARDED (BANK 1)  ) 
    1. Connect an OBD II scan tool to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the scan tool ON.
    3. Read DTCs using the scan tool.

      Result: 

      DTC OUTPUT RESULT

      Display (DTC Output) Proceed To
      P0011 or P0012 A
      P0011 or P0012 and other DTCs B

      HINT: If any DTCs other than P0011 or P0012 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

    1. B: GO TO  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART  
    2. A: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  2. CHECK OPERATION OF OCV 
    1. Start the engine.
    2. Check the engine idling condition twice, when conditions (1) and (2) below.
      1. The C2 Oil Control Valve (OCV) connector is disconnected.
      2. The battery voltage is applied between the terminals of the OCV.

        Result: 

        OCV OPERATION CONDITION

        Conditions Engine Idling Engine Idling
        (1) Normal Other than indicated on left
        (2) Rough, or engine stalls Other than indicated on left
        Proceed To A B
      3. Reconnect the OCV connector.

    1. B: Go to step   4 
    2. A: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  3. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS ( DTC P0011, P0012: CAMSHAFT POSITION "A" -TIMING OVER-ADVANCED OR SYSTEM PERFORMANCE/TIMING OVER-RETARDED (BANK 1)  ) 
    1. Connect the OBD II scan tool to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the scan tool ON.
    3. Clear DTCs.
    4. Start the engine and warm it up.
    5. Drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.
    6. Turn the ignition switch to OFF, and then repeat steps (d) and (e) above.
    7. Read DTCs using the scan tool.

      OK: No DTC output. 

    1. OK: VVT SYSTEM OK 

      HINT: DTC P0011 or P0012 may be set when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. The DTC will remain set even if the system returns to normal after a short time. Foreign objects are filtered out by the oil filter.

    2. NG: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  4. INSPECT ECM (OCV SIGNAL) 
    1. Inspect the ECM using an oscilloscope.
    2. While idling, check the waveform between the terminals of the E3 ECM connector.

      Standard: 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      OC1 + (E3-14) - OC1 - (E3-13) Correct waveform shown

    1. NG: REPLACE ECM (See  ECM (1ZZ-FE/2ZZ-GE) REPLACEMENT  ) 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  5. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN) 
    1. Remove the cylinder head cover (see REPLACEMENT ).
    2. Turn the crankshaft pulley, then align its groove with the timing mark "0" on the timing chain cover.
    3. Check that the point marks of the camshaft timing gears are as shown in the illustration.

      If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°), then align the marks as above.

      OK: The point marks on the camshaft timing gears are as shown in the illustration. 

    4. Reinstall the cylinder head cover (see REPLACEMENT ).

    1. NG: ADJUST VALVE TIMING 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  6. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER 
    1. Remove the generator (see REPLACEMENT ).
    2. Remove the OCV filter.
    3. Check that the filter is not clogged.

      OK: The filter is not clogged. 

    4. Reinstall the OCV filter (see OVERHAUL ).
    5. Reinstall the generator (see REPLACEMENT ).

    1. NG: CLEAN OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  7. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSY (OCV) 
    1. Remove the OCV.
    2. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the OCV.

      Standard: 6.9 to 7.9 Ω at 20°C (68°F) 

    3. Apply the positive battery voltage to terminal 1 and negative battery voltage to terminal 2. Check the valve operation.

      OK: The valve moves quickly. 

    4. Reinstall the OCV.

    1. OK: Go to step   9 
    2. NG: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  8. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSY (OCV) 

    NEXT: GO TO NEXT STEP 

  9. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSY 

    OK: The camshaft timing gear rotates smoothly when pressure is applied. 

    1. OK: Go to step   11 
    2. NG: Go to next step 
  10. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSY 

    NEXT: GO TO NEXT STEP 

  11. CHECK FOR BLOCKAGES (OCV, OIL CHECK VALVE AND OIL HOLE) 

    OK: No blockage. 

    1. OK: REPAIR OR REPLACE 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  12. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS ( DTC P0011, P0012: CAMSHAFT POSITION "A" -TIMING OVER-ADVANCED OR SYSTEM PERFORMANCE/TIMING OVER-RETARDED (BANK 1)  ) 
    1. Connect the OBD II scan tool to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the scan tool ON.
    3. Clear DTCs.
      1. Operating the OBD II scan tool to erase the codes, or disconnect the battery cable or remove the EFI and ETCS fuses for more than 60 seconds.
    4. Start the engine and warm it up.
    5. Drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.
    6. Turn the ignition switch to OFF, and then repeat steps (d) and (e) above.
    7. Read DTCs using the scan tool.

      OK: No DTC output. 

    1. OK: VVT SYSTEM OK

    2. NG: GO TO NEXT STEP
