Inspection Procedure

HINT:

  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST BY INTELLIGENT TESTER (OPERATE OCV) 
    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine and turn the tester on.
    3. Warm up the engine and idle it.
    4. Select the following menu items on the tester: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / ACTIVE TEST / VVT CTRL B1 or VVT CTRL B2.
    5. Check the engine speed while operating the Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the tester.

      Standard 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Operations Specified Conditions
      OCV OFF Normal engine idle speed
      OCV ON Engine idles roughly or stalls (soon after OCV switched from OFF to ON)

    NG: Go to step 2 

    OK: CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS 

  2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (OCV SIGNAL) 
    1. Disconnect the B44 or B19 OCV connector.
    2. While idling, check the waveform between the terminals of the B44 or B19 OCV connector using an oscilloscope.

      OK: Go to Next Step 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      + (B44-1) - - (B44-2) Correct waveform appears
      + (B19-1) - - (B19-2) Correct waveform appears
    3. Reconnect the OCV connector.

    NG: Go to step 3

    OK: REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY 

  3. INSPECT ECM (OCV SIGNAL) 
    1. Inspect the ECM using an oscilloscope.

    2. While idling, check the waveform between the terminals of the B47 ECM connector.

      OK: Go to Next Step 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      OC1+ (B47-17) - OC1- (B47-16) Correct waveform appears
      OC2+ (B47-15) - OC2- (B47-14) Correct waveform appears

    NG: Go to step 4 

    OK: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (OCV SIGNAL OPEN CIRCUIT) 

  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (OCV SIGNAL SHORT CIRCUIT) 
    1. Disconnect the B44 or B19 OCV connector.
    2. Disconnect the B47 ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance between the wire harness side connectors.

      Standard resistance (Check for short) 

      SPECIFIED CONDITION REFERENCE

      Symbols (Terminal No.) Specified condition
      OC1+ (B47-17) - E1 (B47-1) 10 k or higher
      OC1- (B47-16) - E1 (B47-1) 10 k or higher
      OC2+ (B47-15) - E1 (B47-1) 10 k or higher
      OC2- (B47-14) - E1 (B47-1) 10 k or higher

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: REPLACE ECM
