Inspection Procedure

HINT:

Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air/fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.

  1. CHECK SPARK PLUG AND CHECK SPARK OF MISFIRING CYLINDER 

    HINT:

    (See ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION )

    NG: Go to step   4 

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  2. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY - ECM (IGF1 SIGNAL TERMINAL)) 
    1. Disconnect the B21, B22, B23, B34, B35 or B36 ignition coil with igniter connector.

    2. Disconnect the B45 ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance.

      Standard resistance (Check for open) 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      IGF (B36-2) - IGF1 (B45-24) Below 1
      IGF (B21-2) - IGF1 (B45-24) Below 1
      IGF (B35-2) - IGF1 (B45-24) Below 1
      IGF (B22-2) - IGF1 (B45-24) Below 1
      IGF (B34-2) - IGF1 (B45-24) Below 1
      IGF (B23-2) - IGF1 (B45-24) Below 1

      Standard resistance (Check for short) 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      IGF (B36-2) or IGF1 (B45-24) - Body ground 10 k or higher
      IGF (B21-2) or IGF1 (B45-24) - Body ground 10 k or higher
      IGF (B35-2) or IGF1 (B45-24) - Body ground 10 k or higher
      IGF (B22-2) or IGF1 (B45-24) - Body ground 10 k or higher
      IGF (B34-2) or IGF1 (B45-24) - Body ground 10 k or higher
      IGF (B23-2) or IGF1 (B45-24) - Body ground 10 k or higher
    4. Reconnect the ECM connector.
    5. Reconnect the ignition coil with igniter connector.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  3. INSPECT ECM (IGF1 VOLTAGE) 
    1. Disconnect the ignition coil connector.
    2. Turn the ignition switch on (IG).
    3. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the B45 and B47 ECM connector.

      Standard voltage 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      IGF1 (B45-24) - E1 (B47-1) 4.5 to 5.5 V
    4. Reconnect the ignition coil connector.

    NG: REPLACE ECM

    OK: REPLACE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY 

  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY - ECM (IGT SIGNAL TERMINAL)) 
    1. Disconnect the B21, B22, B23, B34, B35 or B36 ignition coil with igniter connector.
    2. Disconnect the B45 ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance.

      Standard resistance (Check for open) 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      IGT (B36-3) - IGT1 (B45-8) Below 1
      IGT (B21-3) - IGT2 (B45-9) Below 1
      IGT (B35-3) - IGT3 (B45-10) Below 1
      IGT (B22-3) - IGT4 (B45-11) Below 1
      IGT (B34-3) - IGT5 (B45-12) Below 1
      IGT (B23-3) - IGT6 (B45-13) Below 1

      Standard resistance (Check for short) 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      IGT (B36-3) or IGT1 (B45-8) - Body ground 10 k or higher
      IGT (B21-3) or IGT2 (B45-9) - Body ground 10 k or higher
      IGT (B35-3) or IGT3 (B45-10) - Body ground 10 k or higher
      IGT (B22-3) or IGT4 (B45-11) - Body ground 10 k or higher
      IGT (B34-3) or IGT5 (B45-12) - Body ground 10 k or higher
      IGT (B23-3) or IGT6 (B45-13) - Body ground 10 k or higher

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  5. INSPECT ECM (IGT1, IGT2, IGT3, IGT4, IGT5 OR IGT6 VOLTAGE) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch on (IG).

    2. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the B45 and B47 ECM connector.

      Standard voltage 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      IGT1 (B45-8) - E1 (B47-1) 0.1 to 4.5 V
      IGT2 (B45-9) - E1 (B47-1) 0.1 to 4.5 V
      IGT3 (B45-10) - E1 (B47-1) 0.1 to 4.5 V
      IGT4 (B45-11) - E1 (B47-1) 0.1 to 4.5 V
      IGT5 (B45-12) - E1 (B47-1) 0.1 to 4.5 V
      IGT6 (B45-13) - E1 (B47-1) 0.1 to 4.5 V

    NG: REPLACE ECM 

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  6. INSPECT ECM (IGT1, IGT2, IGT3, IGT4, IGT5 OR IGT6 VOLTAGE) 
    1. Disconnect the B21, B22, B23, B34, B35 or B36 ignition coil connector.
    2. Turn the ignition switch on (IG).
    3. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the B45 and B47 ECM connector.

      Standard voltage 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      IGT1 (B45-8) - E1 (B47-1) 4.5 V or more
      IGT2 (B45-9) - E1 (B47-1) 4.5 V or more
      IGT3 (B45-10) - E1 (B47-1) 4.5 V or more
      IGT4 (B45-11) - E1 (B47-1) 4.5 V or more
      IGT5 (B45-12) - E1 (B47-1) 4.5 V or more
      IGT6 (B45-13) - E1 (B47-1) 4.5 V or more
    4. Reconnect the ignition coil connector.

    NG: REPLACE ECM

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  7. INSPECT IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY (POWER SOURCE) 
    1. Disconnect the B21, B22, B23, B34, B35 or B36 ignition coil with igniter connector.
    2. Measure the resistance.

      Standard resistance (Check for open) 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      GND (B36-4) - Body ground Below 1
      GND (B21-4) - Body ground Below 1
      GND (B35-4) - Body ground Below 1
      GND (B22-4) - Body ground Below 1
      GND (B34-4) - Body ground Below 1
      GND (B23-4) - Body ground Below 1

    3. Turn the ignition switch on (IG).
    4. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the wire harness side connector.

      Standard voltage 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      +B (B36-1) - GND (B36-4) 9 to 14 V
      +B (B21-1) - GND (B21-4) 9 to 14 V
      +B (B35-1) - GND (B35-4) 9 to 14 V
      +B (B22-1) - GND (B22-4) 9 to 14 V
      +B (B34-1) - GND (B34-4) 9 to 14 V
      +B (B23-1) - GND (B23-4) 9 to 14 V
    5. Reconnect the ignition coil with igniter connector.

    NG: Go to step 8 

    OK: REPLACE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY 

  8. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY - IGNITION SWITCH) 
    1. Disconnect the B36, B21, B35, B22, B34 or B23 ignition coil with igniter connector.

    2. Disconnect the I7 ignition switch connector.
    3. Measure the resistance.

      Standard resistance (Check for open) 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      +B (B36-1) - IG2 (D30-6) Below 1
      +B (B21-1) - IG2 (D30-6) Below 1
      +B (B35-1) - IG2 (D30-6) Below 1
      +B (B22-1) - IG2 (D30-6) Below 1
      +B (B34-1) - IG2 (D30-6) Below 1
      +B (B23-1) - IG2 (D30-6) Below 1

      Standard resistance (Check for short) 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      +B (B36-1) or IG2 (D30-6) - Body ground 10 k or higher
      +B (B21-1) or IG2 (D30-6) - Body ground 10 k or higher
      +B (B35-1) or IG2 (D30-6) - Body ground 10 k or higher
      +B (B22-1) or IG2 (D30-6) - Body ground 10 k or higher
      +B (B34-1) or IG2 (D30-6) - Body ground 10 k or higher
      +B (B23-1) or IG2 (D30-6) - Body ground 10 k or higher
    4. Reconnect the ignition coil with igniter connector.
    5. Reconnect the ignition switch connector.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: REPLACE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY
