Front Brake Pad: Replacement

  1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL 

    Remove the wheel and temporarily fasten the disc with the hub nuts.

  2. INSPECT PAD LINING THICKNESS 

    Check the pad thickness through the caliper inspection hole and replace the pads if they are not within the specification.

    Minimum thickness: 1.0 mm (0.039 in.) 

  3. DISCONNECT FLEXIBLE HOSE FROM SHOCK ABSORBER 

    Remove the bolt and disconnect the flexible hose.

  4. LIFT UP CALIPER 
    1. Hold the sliding pin and remove the bottom side installation bolt.

      HINT:

      Do not disconnect the flexible hose from the brake caliper.

    2. Lift up the caliper and suspend it securely.
  5. REMOVE 2 PADS WITH 4 ANTI-SQUEAL SHIMS 
  6. REMOVE 2 PAD SUPPORT PLATES 
    NOTE: The support plates can be used again provided that they have sufficient rebound, no deformation, cracks or wear. Remove all rust, dirt and foreign particles.
  7. CHECK DISC THICKNESS AND RUNOUT (See  INSPECTION  )

  8. INSTALL PAD SUPPORT PLATES 

    Install the 2 pad support plates.

    NOTE: Do not assemble the upper and lower pad support plates in reverse.
  9. INSTALL NEW PADS 
    NOTE: When replacing worn pads, the anti-squeal shims must be replaced together with the pads.

    1. Apply disc brake grease to both sides of the inner anti-squeal shims position outside (See FRONT BRAKE PAD ).
    2. Install the 2 anti-squeal shims on the outer pad.
    3. Install the 2 anti-squeal shims on the inter pad.

    4. Install the inside pads with the pad wear indicator plate facing downward.
    5. Install the outside pad.

    NOTE: There should be no oil or grease adhering to the friction surfaces of the pads or the disc.
  10. INSTALL CALIPER 
    1. Draw out a small amount of brake fluid from the reservoir.
    2. Press in the piston with a hammer handle or similar implement.

      HINT:

      If the piston is difficult to push in, loosen the bleeder plug and push in the piston while letting some brake fluid escape.

    3. Temporarily install the cylinder on the torque plate with bottom side installation bolt.
    4. Hold the sliding pin and torque the installation bolt.

      Torque: 34 N.m (350 kgf.cm, 25 ft.lbf) 

  11. CONNECT FLEXIBLE HOSE FROM SHOCK ABSORBER 

    Connect the brake hose and install the bolt.

    Torque: 29 N.m (296 kgf.cm, 21 ft.lbf) 

  12. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL 

    Torque: 103 N.m (1,050 kgf.cm, 76 ft.lbf) 

  13. DEPRESS BRAKE PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES 
  14. CHECK THAT FLUID LEVEL IS AT MAX LINE
