Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: In case of using the hand-held tester, start the inspection from step 1 and in case of not using hand-held tester, start from step 2.
  1. Connect OBD II scan tool or hand-held tester, and check park/neutral position switch signal. 

    PREPARATION:

    1. Warm up the engine.
    2. Turn the ignition switch off.
    3. Connect the OBD II scan tool or hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    4. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    5. Push the "ON" button of the OBD II scan tool or the hand-held tester.
    6. Select the item "DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST.
    7. According to the display on tester, read the "DATA LIST".

    CHECK:

    Read the park/neutral position switch signal.

    OK:

    1. OK: Check for intermittent problem (See  HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE  ). 
    2. NG : Go to next step 
  2. Check park/neutral position switch.

    PREPARATION:

    Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.

    CHECK:

    Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below when the shift lever is adjusted into each position.

    OK:

    PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH CONNECTOR RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

    Shift Position Tester Connection Specified Condition
    P 1-3 and 6-9 Below 1 Ω
    Except P 1-3 and 6-9 10 kΩ or higher
    R 2-3 Below 1 Ω
    Except R 2-3 10 kΩ or higher
    N 3-5 and 6-9 Below 1 Ω
    Except N 3-5 and 6-9 10 kΩ or higher
    D 3-7 Below 1 Ω
    Except D 3-7 10 kΩ or higher
    2 3-4 Below 1 Ω
    Except 2 3-4 10 kΩ or higher
    L 3-8 Below 1 Ω
    Except L 3-8 10 kΩ or higher
    1. NG: Replace the park/neutral position switch (See  PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION (PNP) SWITCH  ). 
    2. OK: Go to next step 
  3. Check harness and connector between ECM and park/neutral position switch.

    PREPARATION:

    1. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

    CHECK:

    Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below when the shift position is adjusted into each position.

    OK:

    PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH CONNECTOR VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

    Shift Position Tester connection Specified condition
    P and N E7 - 8 (NSW) - Body ground Below 1 V
    Except P and N E7 - 8 (NSW) - Body ground 10 to 14 V
    R E5 - 11 (R) - Body ground 10 to 14 V*
    Except R E5 - 11 (R) - Body ground Below 1 V
    D E5 - 10 (D) - Body ground 10 to 14 V
    Except D E5 - 10 (D) - Body ground Below 1 V
    2 E5 - 9 (2) - Body ground 10 to 14 V
    Except 2 E5 - 9 (2) - Body ground Below 1 V
    L E5 - 8 (L) - Body ground 10 to 14 V
    Except L E5 - 8 (L) - Body ground Below 1 V
    NOTE: *: The voltage will drop slightly due to lighting up of the back up light.
    1. NG: Repair or replace the harness or connector (  HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE  ). 
    2. OK: Replace the ECM.
