Description & Operation
WARNING:
For warnings and procedures regarding vehicles equipped with Anti-Lock Brake Systems (ABS), see appropriate ANTI-LOCK article.
Hydraulic brake system uses a tandem master cylinder with a vacuum power assist servo. Tundra is equipped with standard front disc and rear drum brakes.
A Load-Sensing Proportioning Valve and By-Pass Valve (LSPV & BV) are used to regulate brake pressure between front and rear brakes. Rear brakes on all models are self-adjusting.
Parking brake lever or pedal mechanically activates rear brakes. A cable applies rear shoes.
Optional equipment is as follows:
- Tundra uses a VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) system, which helps maintain cornering stability of vehicle if it is about to slip sideways due to a sudden steering maneuver or unexpected changes in surface conditions.
- The 4WD model has adopted an Active-TRAC system, which gives vehicle a high level of drive-through performance in various surface conditions, ranging from snow-covered roads to rough off road conditions.
- The 2WD model has adopted a TRAC system, which suppresses slippage of the drive wheels.
- An ABS with EBD system, which properly distributes braking force to front and rear wheels in accordance with driving conditions of the vehicle, has been adopted.
- A brake assist (BA) system, which assists the driver who cannot press the brake pedal firmly, has been adopted. If driver presses brake pedal suddenly, this system determines the action to be emergency braking, and generates a large braking force.
- For VSC system, a hydraulic brake booster unit is used. This unit integrates brake booster function, master cylinder function, and actuators for VSC, Active-TRAC, ABS, and Brake Assist system.
- A newly developed automatic Limited Slip Differential (LSD) has been adopted.
