Inspection Procedure

HINT:

Performing the ACTIVE TEST using the hand-held tester allows the relay, VSV, actuator and so on to operate without parts removal. Performing the ACTIVE TEST as the first step of troubleshooting is one method to shorten labor time.

It is possible to display the DATA LIST during the ACTIVE TEST

  1. Turn the ignition switch off.
  2. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  4. Push the "ON" button of the hand-held tester.
  5. Select the item "DIAGNOSIS/ENHANCED OBD II/ACTIVE TEST/SHIFT".
  6. According to the display on tester, perform the "ACTIVE TEST".

    HINT:

    While driving, the shift position can be forcibly changed with the hand-held tester.

    Comparing the shift position commanded by the ACTIVE TEST with the actual shift position enables you to confirm the problem (see FAIL-SAFE CHART ).

HINT:

  1. CHECK OTHER DTCS OUTPUT ON ADDITION TO PTC P0766) 
    1. Connect the OBD II scan tool or the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and push the OBD II scan tool or the hand-held tester main switch ON.
    3. When you use hand-held tester:

      Select the item "DIAGNOSIS/ENHANCED OBD II/DTC INFO/CURRENT CODES".

    4. Read the DTCs using the OBD II scan tool or the hand-held tester.

      Result: 

      HAND-HELD TESTER

      Display (DTC output) Proceed to
      Only "P0766" is output A
      "P0766" and other DTCs B

    HINT:

    If any other codes besides "P0766" is output, perform the troubleshooting for those DTCs first.

    1. B: GO TO RELEVANT DTC CHART (See  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART  ) 
    2. A: GO TO NEXT STEP. 
  2. INSPECT SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE (S4) 
    1. Remove the shift solenoid valve S4.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition 20 X (68°F)
      Solenoid Connector (S4) - Solenoid Body (S4) 11 to 15Ω
    3. Connect positive (+) lead to the terminal of solenoid connector, negative (-) lead to the solenoid body.

      OK: The solenoid makes an operating noise.

    1. NG: REPLACE SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE (S4) 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 
  3. INSPECT TRANSMISSION VALVE BODY ASSY (See chapter 2 in the problem symptoms table) (See  PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE  ) 

    OK: There are no foreign objects on each valve and they operate smoothly. 

    1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE TRANSMISSION VALVE BODY ASSY (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 
  4. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSY (See  INSPECTION  ) 

    OK: The torque converter clutch operates normally. 

    1. NG: REPLACE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSY 
    2. OK: REPAIR OR REPLACE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSY (See  REPLACEMENT  )
