Inspection Procedure

HINT:

Performing the ACTIVE TEST using the hand-held tester allows the relay, VSV, actuator and so on to operate without parts removal. Performing the ACTIVE TEST as the first step of troubleshooting is one method to shorten labor time.

It is possible to display the DATA LIST during the ACTIVE TEST.

  1. Warm up the engine.
  2. Turn the ignition switch off.
  3. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  5. Push the "ON" button of the hand-held tester.
  6. Select the item "DIAGNOSIS/ENHANCED OBD II/ACTIVE TEST".
  7. According to the display on tester, perform the "ACTIVE TEST".

    HINT:

    • This test can be conducted when the vehicle speed is 58 km/h (36 mph) or more.
    • This test can be conducted with the 3rd or O/D gear.
  8. Lightly depress the accelerator pedal and check that the engine speed does not change abruptly.

    HINT:

    • When changing the accelerator pedal opening angle while driving, if the engine speed does not change, lock up is on.
    • Slowly release, but not fully, the accelerator pedal in order to decelerate. (Fully releasing the pedal will close the throttle valve and lock up may be turned off.)

  1. CHECK OTHER DTCS OUTPUT ON ADDITION TO PTC P0741) 
    1. Connect the OBD II scan tool or the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and push the OBD II scan tool or the hand-held tester main switch ON,
    3. When you use hand-held tester:

      Select the item "DIAGNOSIS/ENHANCED OBD II/DTC INFO/CURRENT CODES".

    4. Read the DTCs using the OBD II scan tool or the hand-held tester.

      Result: 

      HAND-HELD TESTER

      Display (DTC output) Proceed to
      Only "P0741" is output A
      "P0741" and other DTCs B

    HINT:

    If any other codes besides "P0741" is output, perform the troubleshooting for those DTCs first.

    1. NG: GO TO RELEVANT DTC CHART (See  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART  ) 
    2. A: GO TO NEXT STEP. 
  2. INSPECT TRANSMISSION WIRE (DSL) 
    1. Disconnect the transmission wire connector from the transaxle.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition 20°C (68°F)
      3 - Body ground 11 to 13Ω

    1. NG: Go to step   4 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 
  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (TRANSMISSION WIRE - ECM) 
    1. Connect the transmission wire connector.
    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition 20°C (68°F)
      E8 - 9 (DSL) - Body ground 11 to 13ohm;

    1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (See  ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT INSPECTION PROCEDURE  ) 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 
  4. INSPECT SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE (DSL) 
    1. Remove the shift solenoid valve DSL.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition 20°C (68°F)
      Solenoid Connector (DSL) - Solenoid Body (DSL) 11 to 13Ω

    3. Connect positive (+) lead to the terminal of solenoid connector, negative (-) lead to the solenoid body.

      OK: The solenoid valve makes an operating noise. 

    1. NG: REPLACE SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE (DSL) 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 
  5. CHECK TRANSMISSION WIRE (See  ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT INSPECTION PROCEDURE  ) 

    OK:The connectors and pins are securely installed. 

    There is no open or short on the wire harness. 

    1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE TRANSMISSION WIRE (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 
  6. INSPECT TRANSMISSION VALVE BODY ASSY (See chapter 2 in the problem symptoms table) (See  PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE  ) 

    OK: There are no foreign objects on each valve and they operate smoothly. 

    1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE TRANSMISSION VALVE BODY ASSY (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 
  7. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSY (See  INSPECTION  ) 

    OK: The torque converter clutch operates normally. 

    1. NG: REPLACE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSY 
    2. OK: REPAIR AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSY (See  REPLACEMENT  )
