OBDII scan tool (excluding hand-held tester):

  1. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSY (OPERATE OCV) 
    1. Disconnect the C2 camshaft timing oil control valve connector.
    2. Apply positive battery voltage between the terminals of the camshaft timing oil control valve.
    3. Check the engine speed.

      Standard: 

      Engine speed is rough idle or engine is stalled. 

    4. Reconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve connector.

      1. NG: REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSY 
      2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 
  2. INSPECT ECM (OCV SIGNAL) 
    1. Inspection using the oscilloscope.
    2. During idling, check the waveform between the terminals of the E3 ECM connector.

      Standard: 

      TERMINALS OF E3 ECM CONNECTOR WAVEFORM CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      OCV+ (E3-15) - OCV- (E3-14) Correct waveform is as shown

      1. NG: REPLACE ECM (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
      2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 
  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE (OCV)-ECM) 
    1. Disconnect the C2 camshaft timing oil control valve connector.
    2. Disconnect the E3 ECM connector.
    3. Check the resistance between the wire harness side connectors.

      Standard (Check for open): 

      CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE CONNECTOR TERMINAL RESISTANCE (FOR OPEN)

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      Oil control valve (C2-1) - OCV+ (E3-15) Below 1Ω
      Oil control valve (C2-2) - OCV- (E3-14) Below 1Ω

      Standard (Check for short): 

      CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE CONNECTOR TERMINAL RESISTANCE (FOR SHORT)

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      Oil control valve (C2-1) or OCV+ (E3-15) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      Oil control valve (C2-2) or OCV-(E3-14) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Reconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve connector.
    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

      1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 
      2. OK: CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS (See  CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS  )
