Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Toyota Matrix and 2004 Toyota Corolla. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING CODES under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Retrieve DTCs. See RETRIEVING CODES under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC 33/B1141 is not displayed, go to step 9. If DTC 33/B1141 is displayed, go to next step.
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access air bag sensor assembly. See AIR BAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Ensure air bag sensor assembly harness connectors are properly connected. If air bag sensor assembly harness connectors are properly connected, go to next step. If air bag sensor assembly harness connector are not properly connected, reconnect connector.
- Access left side air bag sensor assembly. See SIDE AIR BAG SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Ensure left side air bag sensor assembly harness connector is properly connected. If side air bag sensor assembly harness connector is properly connected, go to next step. If side air bag sensor assembly harness connector is not properly connected, reconnect connector.
- Disconnect air bag sensor assembly harness connector A12. Disconnect left side air bag sensor assembly harness connector. Connect jumper wire between left side air bag sensor assembly harness connector terminals No. 1 (circuit ESL, Gray/Blue wire) and No. 4 (circuit VUPL, Pink/Blue wire). See Figure. Connect jumper wire between left side air bag sensor assembly harness connector terminals No. 2 (circuit SSL-, Blue/White wire) and No. 3 (circuit FSL, Light Green/Black wire). Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector A12, terminals No. 12 (Gray/Blue wire) and No. 7 (Pink/Blue wire). See Figure. Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector A12, terminals No. 10 (Light Green/Black wire) and No. 9 (Blue/White wire). If resistance is less than one ohm in both circuits, go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm in either circuit, repair or replace harness or connector between left side air bag sensor assembly and air bag sensor assembly. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Disconnect all jumper wires. Measure resistance between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector A12, terminals No. 12 (Gray/Blue wire), No. 7 (Pink/Blue wire), No. 10 (Light Green/Black wire) and No. 9 (Blue/White wire). If resistance is more than one megohm in all circuits, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm in any circuit, repair or replace harness or connector between left side air bag sensor assembly and air bag sensor assembly.
- Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector A12, terminals No. 12 (Gray/Blue wire) and No. 7 (Pink/Blue wire). See Figure. Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector A12, terminals No. 10 (Light Green/Black wire) and No. 9 (Blue/White wire). If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, repair or replace harness or connector between left side air bag sensor assembly and air bag sensor assembly.
- Connect negative battery cable and wait at least 2 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector A12, terminals No. 12 (Gray/Blue wire), No. 7 (Pink/Blue wire), No. 10 (Light Green/Black wire) and No. 9 (Blue/White wire). If voltage is less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is more than one volt, repair or replace harness or connector between left side air bag sensor assembly and air bag sensor assembly.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds. Reconnect air bag sensor assembly harness connector A12. Remove left and right side air bag sensors. Install left side air bag sensor on right side, and install right side air bag sensor on left side. Reconnect side air sensor harness connectors. Connect negative battery cable and wait at least 2 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. If DTC 33/B1141 is displayed, replace air bag sensor assembly. If DTC 32/B1140 is displayed, replace original left side air bag sensor assembly. If DTCs 33/B1141 and 32/B1140 are not displayed, go to next step.
- Check for intermittent air bag system fault. See AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENT . If AIR BAG warning light illuminates while checking for intermittent fault, go to step 1. If AIR BAG warning light does not illuminate while checking for intermittent fault, replace all air bag system components, including wiring harness. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .
