Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Toyota Matrix and 2004 Toyota Corolla. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Retrieve DTCs. See RETRIEVING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC 32/B1140 is not displayed, go to step  9. If DTC 32/B1140 is displayed, go to next step.
  2. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access air bag sensor assembly. See AIR BAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Ensure air bag sensor assembly harness connectors are properly connected. If air bag sensor assembly harness connectors are properly connected, go to next step. If air bag sensor assembly harness connector are not properly connected, reconnect connector.
  3. Access right side air bag sensor assembly. See SIDE AIR BAG SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Ensure right side air bag sensor assembly harness connector is properly connected. If side air bag sensor assembly harness connector is properly connected, go to next step. If side air bag sensor assembly harness connector is not properly connected, reconnect connector.
  4. Disconnect air bag sensor assembly harness connector A14. Disconnect right side air bag sensor assembly harness connector. Connect jumper wire between right side air bag sensor assembly harness connector terminals No. 1 (circuit ESR, Gray wire) and No. 4 (circuit VUPR, Pink wire). See Fig 1. Connect jumper wire between right side air bag sensor assembly harness connector terminals No. 2 (circuit SSR-, Blue/Yellow wire) and No. 3 (circuit FSR, Light Green wire). Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector A14, terminals No. 7 (Gray wire) and No. 12 (Pink wire). See Figure. Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector A14, terminals No. 9 (Light Green wire) and No. 10 (Blue/Yellow wire). If resistance is less than one ohm in both circuits, go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm in either circuit, repair or replace harness or connector between right side air bag sensor assembly and air bag sensor assembly. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  5. Disconnect all jumper wires. Measure resistance between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector A14, terminals No. 7 (Gray wire), No. 12 (Pink wire), No. 9 (Light Green wire) and No. 10 (Blue/Yellow wire). If resistance is more than one megohm in all circuits, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm in any circuit, repair or replace harness or connector between right side air bag sensor assembly and air bag sensor assembly.
  6. Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector A14, terminals No. 7 (Gray wire) and No. 12 (Pink wire). See Figure. Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector A14, terminals No. 9 (Light Green wire) and No. 10 (Blue/Yellow wire). If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, repair or replace harness or connector between right side air bag sensor assembly and air bag sensor assembly.
  7. Connect negative battery cable and wait at least 2 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector A14, terminals No. 7 (Gray wire), No. 12 (Pink wire), No. 9 (Light Green wire) and No. 10 (Blue/Yellow wire). If voltage is less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is more than one volt, repair or replace harness or connector between right side air bag sensor assembly and air bag sensor assembly.
  8. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds. Reconnect air bag sensor assembly harness connector A14. Remove right and left side air bag sensors. Install right side air bag sensor on left side, and install left side air bag sensor on right side. Reconnect side air sensor harness connectors. Connect negative battery cable and wait at least 2 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Retrieve DTCs. See RETRIEVING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC 32/B1140 is displayed, replace air bag sensor assembly. If DTC 33/B1141 is displayed, replace original right side air bag sensor assembly. If DTCs 32/B1140 and 33/B1141 are not displayed, go to next step.
  9. Check for intermittent air bag system fault. See AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENT . If AIR BAG warning light illuminates while checking for intermittent fault, go to step  1. If AIR BAG warning light does not illuminate while checking for intermittent fault, replace all air bag system components, including wiring harness. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .
