Front Axle Hub & Wheel Bearing: Removal

  1. Remove front wheel. Check wheel bearing backlash and deviation (rotational free play). See WHEEL BEARING INSPECTION  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.
  2. Unstake lock nut. Hold drive shaft from turning by applying brakes and remove drive shaft lock nut. Remove brake caliper and disc and support caliper out of way. Remove disc.
  3. Remove ABS speed sensor and wire harness clamp. Remove brake hose from shock absorber clamp. Remove bolt and 2 nuts on lower control arm and separate from ball joint. Remove nut from front stabilizer bar link assembly.
  4. Remove cotter pin and nut from tie rod end. Use separator tool to disconnect tie rod end from steering knuckle.
  5. Using a plastic hammer, separate the front drive shaft assembly from the axle hub. Remove 2 nuts and bolts from lower end of shock absorber. Remove steering knuckle and axle hub from vehicle. See Figure.
  6. Remove cotter pin and nut, and use separator tool to remove lower ball joint from hub assembly. See Fig 1. Remove inner snap ring.
  7. Mount assembly in vise. Use slide hammer and attaching plate to remove axle hub. See Fig 1. Using SST, remove the inner race of hub bearing from the hub sub-assembly, Special Tool (09950-40011, 09951-04020, 09952-04010, 09953-04030, 09954-04010, 09955-04061, 09957-04010, 09958-04011, 09950-60010, 09951-00370). See Fig 1. Remove 3 bolts and remove dust cover.
  8. Place the inner race of hub bearing on the outer race of hub bearing. Using SST and a press, remove the hub bearing from the steering knuckle, Special Tool (09527-17011, 09950-60010, 09951-00640, 09950-70010, 09951-07100). See Fig 2.
