Inspection Procedure

HINT:

When releasing the parking brake, set the chocks to hold the vehicle for safety.

  1. CHECK BRAKE FLUID 
    1. Release the parking brake pedal.
    2. Check that the brake fluid level is proper.
    1. NG: ADD BRAKE FLUID 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 
  2. CHECK DTC FOR ABS 
    1. Are the DTC recorded? (see PRE-CHECK )
    1. NO: Go to step 3 
    2. YES: REPAIR CIRCUIT INDICATED BY OUTPUT CODE 
  3. INSPECT BRAKE WARNING LIGHT 

    WHEN USING HAND-HELD TESTER: 

    1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Select the item "BRAKE WARN LIGHT" in the ACTIVE TEST and operate the BRAKE warning light on the hand-held tester.
      VEHICLE CONDITION / TEST DETAILS CHART

      BRAKE WRN LIGHT Turns BRAKE warning light ON/OFF Observe combination meter
    4. Check that "ON" and "OFF" of the BRAKE warning light are indicated on the combination meter when using the hand-held tester.

      OK: Turn the BRAKE warning light on or off in accordance with the hand-held tester. 

    WHEN NOT USING HAND-HELD TESTER: 

    1. Turn the ignition switch off and disconnect the connector from the skid control ECU.
    2. Ground terminal BRL of the skid control ECU.
    3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    4. Check that the brake warning light.

      OK: Turn the light on or off in accordance with the connection of terminal BRL and body ground.

    1. NG: Go to step 4 
    2. OK: REPLACE ABS & TRACTION ACTUATOR ASSY (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
  4. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Remove the parking brake switch connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      SPECIFICATION TESTER CONNECTION

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      P3-1 - Ground part Released Below 1 Ω
      P3-1 - Ground part Pushed in 10 kΩ or higher

    1. NG: REPLACE PARKING BRAKE SWITCH ASSY 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 
  5. CHECK HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (SKID CONTROL ECU - PARKING BRAKE SWITCH) 
    1. Disconnect the skid control ECU connector and the parking brake switch connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      SPECIFICATION TESTER CONNECTION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      S27-28 (PKB) - P3-1 (PKB) Below 1 Ω
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      SPECIFICATION TESTER CONNECTION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      S27-28 (PKB) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

    1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 
  6. INSPECT BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WARNING SWITCH 
    1. Remove the reservoir tank cap and strainer.
    2. Disconnect the brake fluid level warning switch connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      SPECIFICATION TESTER CONNECTION

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      (B4-1) - (B4-2) Float UP 10 kΩ or higher
      (B4-1) - (B4-2) Float DOWN Below 1 Ω

    1. NG: REPLACE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WARNING SWITCH 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 
  7. CHECK HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WARNING SWITCH - COMBINATION METER) 
    1. Disconnect the combination meter connector and the brake fluid level warning switch connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      SPECIFICATION TESTER CONNECTION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      (C12-16) - (B4-1) Below 1 Ω
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      SPECIFICATION TESTER CONNECTION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      (C12-16) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

    1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 
  8. CHECK HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (SKID CONTROL ECU - COMBINATION METER) 
    1. Disconnect the skid control ECU connector and combination meter connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      SPECIFICATION TESTER CONNECTION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      S27-44 (BRL) - (C12-3) Below 1 Ω
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      SPECIFICATION TESTER CONNECTION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      S27-44 (BRL) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

    1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 
    2. OK: REPAIR OR REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSY (See  REPLACEMENT  )
