Inspection Procedure
HINT:
- If DTC P0011 or P0012 is displayed, check right bank VVT system circuit.
- If DTC P0021 or P0022 is displayed, check left bank VVT system circuit.
Read freeze frame data using OBD II scan tool or hand-held tester. Because freeze frame records the engine conditions when the malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, it is useful for determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, the engine was warmed up or not, the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, etc. at the time of the malfunction.
Hand-held tester:
- Check valve timing (See REMOVAL
).
- NG: Repair valve timing.
- OK: Go to next step.
- Check operation of OCV.
PREPARATION:
- Start the engine and warmed it up.
- Connect the hand-held tester and select the VVT from the ACTIVE TEST menu.
CHECK:
Check the engine speed when operate the OCV by the hand-held tester.
OK:
OCV is OFF: Normal engine speed
OCV is ON: Rough idle or engine stall
- OK: VVT system is OK.*
*: DTCs P0011, P0012, P0021 and P0022 are also output after the foreign object is caught in some part of the system in the engine oil and the system returns to normal in a short time. As ECM controls so that foreign objects are ejected, there is no problem about VVT system. There is also no problem since the oil filter should get the foreign object in the engine oil.
- NG: Go to next step.
- Check voltage between terminals OC1 (or 2) + and OC1 (or 2) - of ECM connector (See DTC P0010 CAMSHAFT POSITION "A" ACTUATOR CIRCUIT (BANK 1), DTC P0020: CAMSHAFT POSITION "A" ACTUATOR CIRCUIT (BANK 2) , step 3).
- NG: Check and replace ECM (See PROCEDURE ).
- OK: Go to next step.
- Check VVT controller assembly.
PREPARATION:
- Remove the timing belt (See REMOVAL ).
- Remove the cylinder head cover.
- Remove the OCV (See REMOVAL ).
- Drain oil into the VVT controller assembly (See REMOVAL ).
CHECK:
Check whether the oil into VVT controller assembly is drained or not.
OK:
The oil into VVT controller assembly is drained.
- NG: Replace VVT controller assembly, and then go to step 5.
- OK: Go to next step.
- Check OCV (See INSPECTION
.
- NG: Replace OCV, and then go to step 6.
- OK: Go to next step.
- Check blockage of OCV, oil check valve and oil pipe No.1.
- NG: Repair or replace.
- OK: Go to next step.
- Check whether or not DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is stored.
PREPARATION:
- Clear the DTC (See PRE-CHECK ).
- Perform simulation test.
CHECK:
Check whether or not DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is stored (See PRE-CHECK ).
OK:
DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is not stored
- OK: VVT system is OK.*

OBD II scan tool (excluding hand-held tester):
- Check valve timing (See REMOVAL
).
- NG: Repair valve timing.
- OK: Go to next step.
- Check operation of OCV.
PREPARATION:
Start the engine.
CHECK:
- Check the engine speed when disconnecting the OCV connector.
- Check the engine speed when applying battery positive voltage between the terminals of the OCV.
RESULT:
- Type II: Go to Step 4 .
- Type I: Go to next step.
- Check voltage between terminals OC1 (or 2) + and OC1 (or 2) - of ECM connector (See DTC P0100 MASS OR VOLUME AIR FLOW CIRCUIT , go to step 3).
- OK: VVT system is OK.*
