Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Toyota 4Runner. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. DATA LIST 

    HINT:

    According to the DATA LIST displayed by the hand-held tester, you can read the value of the switch, sensor, actuator and so on without parts removal. Reading the DATA LIST as the first step of troubleshooting is one method to shorten labor time.

    NOTE: In the table below, the values listed under "Normal Condition" are reference values. Do not depend solely on these reference values when deciding whether a part is faulty or not.
    1. Warm up the engine.
    2. Turn the ignition switch off.
    3. Connect the hand-held tester together with the CAN VIM (controller area network vehicle interface module) to the DLC3.
    4. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    5. Turn on the tester.
    6. Select the item "DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST".
    7. According to the display on the tester, read the "DATA LIST".

  1. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Jack up the vehicle.
    2. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below when the shift lever is moved to each position.

      Standard:

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION (1 OF 2)

      Shift Position Tester Connection Specified Condition
      P 2 - 6 and 4 - 5 Below 1 Ω
      Except P urarr 10 kΩ or higher
      R 2-1 Below 1 Ω
      Except R urarr 10 kΩ or higher
      N 2-9 and 4-5 Below 1 Ω
      Except N urarr 10 kΩ or higher
      D and 4 2-7 Below 1 Ω
      Except D and 4 urarr 10 kΩ or higher
      3 2-3 Below 1 Ω
      Except 3 urarr 10 kΩ or higher
      2 and L 2-8 Below 1 Ω
      Except 2 and L urarr 10 kΩ or higher
    1. NG: REPLACE  PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSY 
    2. OK: Go to next step. 
  2. INSPECT SHIFT LOCK CONTROL ECU SUB-ASSY(TRANSMISSION CONTROL SWITCH) 
    1. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    2. Disconnect the shift lock control ECU connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below when the shift lever is moved to each position.

      Standard: 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION (2 OF 2)

      Shift position Tester connection Specified condition
      D 9-2 (NSSD - ATD) Below 1 Ω
      4 10 kΩ or higher
      D 9-3 (NSSD - AT4) 10 kΩ or higher
      4 Below 1 Ω
      2 10-5(NSSL-AT2) Below 1 Ω
      L 10 kΩ or higher
      2 10-4 (NSSL-ATL) 0 kΩ or higher
      L Below 1 Ω

    1. NG: REPLACE SHIFT LOCK CONTROL ECU SUB-ASSY (SEE  FLOOR SHIFT ASSY  ) 
    2. OK: Go to next step. 
  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR(PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ECM) 
    1. Connect the shift lock control ECU connector.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, and measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below when the shift lever is moved to each position.

      Standard:

    HINT:

    *: The voltage will drop slightly due to the turning on of the back up light.

    1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (SEE  ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT INSPECTION PROCEDURE  ) 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 

      REPLACE  ECM (1GR-FE)
