Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Toyota 4Runner. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: When replacing the master cylinder solenoid, perform zero point CALIBRATION  .
  1. INSPECT BRAKE WARNING LIGHT 
    1. Disconnect the skid control ECU (S29) connector.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    3. Check that the brake warning light comes on.

    OK: 

    Brake warning light comes on. 

    1. NG: Go to step 2 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 

      REPLACE MASTER CYLINDER SOLENOID (SEE  OVERHAUL  ) 

  2. INSPECT BATTERY 
    1. Check the battery voltage.

    Standard: 

    Voltage: 11 to 14 V 

    1. NG: INSPECT CHARGING SYSTEM ( ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION  ,  ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION  ) 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  3. INSPECT FUSE (GAUGE FUSE) 
    1. Remove the GAUGE fuse from the driver side J/B.
    2. Check the GAUGE fuse.

    Standard: 

    Below 1 Ω 

    1. NG: CHECK FOR SHORT IN ALL HARNESS AND CONNECTOR CONNECTED TO FUSE AND REPLACE FUSE 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (BETWEEN SKID CONTROL ECU AND COMBINATION METER) ( HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING  ) 
    1. Install the GAUGE fuse.
    2. Disconnect the combination meter connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      S29-3 (BRL) - C11 -2 Below 1Ω
      S29-3 (BRL) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

    1. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 
    2. OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 
  5. INSPECT COMBINATION METER ASSY 
    1. Reconnect the skid control ECU (S29) connector and combination meter connector.
    2. Check if the indicators (shift position, airbag etc.) other than brake warning light operate normally.

      Result: 

      RESULT DESCRIPTION

      Indicators OK A
      Indicators NG B
    1. B: GO TO COMBINATION METER SYSTEM (see  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING  ) 
    2. A: GO TO NEXT STEP 

      REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSY ( COMBINATION METER ASSY  )
