Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2002 Toyota Camry, 2002 Lexus RX 300, and 2001 Toyota RAV4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the oil pan. See LUBRICATION in appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Disconnect the solenoid connector. Measure the solenoid resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the solenoid connector. Resistance should be between 5.1-5.5 ohms at 68°F (20°C).

Connect battery voltage, with an 8-10 watt bulb, to terminal No. 1 of the solenoid connector and ground terminal No. 2, then check the movement of the valve. When battery voltage is applied, valve should move out of solenoid. See Fig 1. When battery positive voltage is removed, valve should move back in. If both checks operated as described, go to next step. If both checks did not operate as described, replace SLT shift solenoid valve.

  2. Check transaxle wiring harness for an intermittent open circuit or weak terminal tension at connectors. It may be necessary to manipulate harness with testing equipment connected to locate condition. If wiring harness and connector are okay, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
