Parking Brake (Internal Shoe): Inspection
- Inspect disassembled parts for wear, rust or damage.
- Measure the thickness of the brake shoe lining. If the lining thickness is at the minimum thickness or less, or if there is severe, uneven wear, replace the brake shoe. See DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Using a brake drum gauge or equivalent tool, measure the inside diameter of the disc. Replace the disc if the inside diameter is at the discard diameter or greater. Replace the disc or machine it with a brake lathe if the disc is scored or worn unevenly. Measure the inside diameter of the disc to verify that the disc is within specifications after machining. See DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Inspect parking brake lining and disc for proper contact:
- Apply chalk to the inside surface of the disc, then grind down the brake shoe lining to fit.
- If the contact between the disc and the brake shoe lining is improper, correct it using a brake shoe grinder or replace the brake shoe assembly.
- Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the parking brake shoe and lever. See Fig 1. If the clearance is not within the specification, replace the shim with one of the correct size. Shim thicknesses available are 0.012 in. (0.3 mm), 0.024 in. (0.6 mm), and 0.035 in. (.0.9 mm).
- If necessary, replace shim:
- Using an appropriate tool, remove the "C" washer and shim. See Fig 2.
- Install the correct size shim with a new "C" washer.
- Measure the clearance between the parking brake shoe and lever to verify it is within specification. See Fig 1. If not within specification repeat above procedure.
