Brake Pedal Free Play

NOTE: Brake pedal free play is distance brake pedal travels with engine off before resistance is felt. The free play to the first point of resistance is due to the play between the clevis and pin. Pad to pin length causes this play to be magnified. Allowable brake pedal free play is 0.04-0.24 in. (1.1-6 mm) at the pedal.
  1. Check pedal freeplay:
    1. Stop the engine and depress the brake pedal several times, until there is no more vacuum left in the booster.
    2. Push in the pedal by hand, until the beginning of the resistance is felt, then measure the distance. Pedal free play specification is 0.04-0.24 in. (1-6 mm).
    3. Stoplight Switch Clearance:
      • If Pedal free play is incorrect, check the stop light switch clearance. Stop light switch clearance specification is 0.020-0.094 in. (0.5-2.4 mm).
      • If the stop light switch clearance is within specification, troubleshoot the brake system.
