Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2002 Toyota Camry, 2002 Lexus RX 300, and 2001 Toyota RAV4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Access ECM. See Figure-Figure . Disconnect appropriate ECM connector. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between ECM connector terminals NT+ and NT-. See PIN VOLTAGE TESTS . Resistance should be 500-620 ohms for Toyota made sensors and 560-680 ohms for AISIN made sensors. If resistance is as specified, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
  2. Remove the transaxle oil pan. See LUBRICATION in appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Remove input turbine speed sensor from transaxle. See Figure. Measure resistance between speed sensor terminals. Resistance should be 500-620 ohms for Toyota made sensors and 560-680 ohms for AISIN made sensors. Connect a DVOM to speed sensor terminals.
  3. Measure voltage when a magnet is placed close to tip of speed sensor, then taken away quickly. See Figure. Voltage generated should be intermittent and extremely low. If resistance and voltage are not as specified, replace speed sensor. If resistance and voltage are as specified, check and repair wiring harness or connector between speed sensor and ECM.
