Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota ECHO, 2002 Toyota Celica, 2001 Toyota ECHO, and 2001 Toyota Celica. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Check speedometer operation. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If speedometer is operating properly, go to next step. If speedometer is not operating properly, check for open or short in VSS circuit. See VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR  under COMPONENT TESTS. Repair as necessary.
  2. Access the ECM, located in engine compartment, near battery on Celica, and behind glove compartment on ECHO. See Figure and Figure . Disconnect appropriate ECM connector for terminal SPD. See Figure and Figure . Using a DVOM, check for continuity between ground and appropriate ECM connector at terminal No. 22 on Celica, or terminal No. 9 on ECHO. If continuity does not exist, check and repair wiring harness or connector as necessary. If continuity exists, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and appropriate ECM connector at terminal No. 22 on Celica, or terminal No. 9 on ECHO. If voltage is 9-14 volts, check for open in wiring harness or connector between ECM and combination meter. Repair as necessary. If wiring harness and connector are okay, replace ECM and retest system. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
