Diagnostic Procedure

NOTE: Voltage in "R" position will decrease slightly due to back-up light operation.
  1. Access the ECM, located in engine compartment, near battery on Celica, and behind glove compartment on ECHO. See Figure and Figure . Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using a DVOM, measure voltage at terminals (NSW on ECHO and "N" on Celica) or "P", "D", "R", "2" and "L" of ECM connector between terminal and body ground with selector lever in each shift position. See Figure and Figure . If voltages measured are within specification, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If any voltage measurement is not within specification, go to next step.
  2. Check park/neutral position switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. Replace as necessary. If switch is okay, check and repair circuit(s) between PNP switch and ECM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary. If circuits are okay, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
