Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota ECHO, 2002 Toyota Celica, 2001 Toyota ECHO, and 2001 Toyota Celica. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove transaxle oil pan. See LUBRICATION in appropriate SERVICING article. Disconnect solenoid connector. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between solenoid terminals. If resistance is 5.0-5.6 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 5.0-5.6 ohms, replace solenoid.
  2. Connect positive lead with 5-6-watt bulb from battery to terminal No. 1 (Green wire) of solenoid. Connect negative lead to terminal No. 2 of solenoid. With power supplied to solenoid, ensure solenoid valve moves outward. With power disconnected, ensure solenoid valve moves inward.
  3. If solenoid does not operate as described, replace solenoid. If solenoid operates as described, check and repair wiring harness or connector between solenoid and ECM connector. If wiring harness and connector are okay, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
