Diagnosis & Repair

  1. Connect the oscilloscope between terminals M+ or M- and E1 of the ECM connectors. Start the engine. Check the waveform between terminals M+ or M- and E1 of the ECM connector when the engine is idling. See Figure. The correct waveforms are as shown. See Fig 1. The waveform frequency varies depending on the throttle opening. If okay, check and replace ECM. If not okay, go to next step.

  2. Disconnect the throttle control motor and sensor connector. Measure the resistance between terminals No. 1 and 2 of the throttle control motor. See Fig 2. If resistance is 0.3-100 ohms at 68°F (20°C), go to next step. If not, replace throttle body.

  3. Check for open and short in harness and connector between throttle control motor and sensor and ECM. Repair harness as necessary. If okay, replace ECM.
