Diagnosis & Repair (Using Hand-Held Tester)

  1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch ON, and push the hand-held tester main switch ON. Read the STA signal on the hand-held tester while the starter operates. With ignition switch on, STA signal should be off. With ignition switch in start position, STA signal should be on. See Fig 1. If okay, check and replace ECM. If not okay, go to next step.

  2. Check ignition switch. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article. Replace ignition switch as necessary. If okay, go to next step.
  3. Check park/neutral position switch. See DTC P0705 OR DTC P0850 . Replace as necessary. If okay, go to next step.
  4. Check for open in harness and connector between ECM and park/neutral position switch. Repair as necessary. If okay, check and replace ECM.
