Diagnosis & Repair

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Lexus LS 430. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Check spark plug and spark of misfiring cylinder. If okay, go to next step. If not okay, go to step  4.
  2. Check for open and short in harness and connector in IGF and IGT signal circuits between ECM and ignition coil with igniter. Repair as necessary. If okay, go to next step.
  3. Remove the engine room ECU cover. Disconnect the ignition coil with the igniter connector. Turn the ignition switch ON. Measure the voltage between terminals IF1L, IF1R, IF2L and IF2R of the ECM connector E4 and body ground. See Fig 1. If voltage is 4.5-5.5 volts, replace ignition coil with ignitor. If voltage is not 4.5-5.5 volts, replace ECM.

  4. Check for open and short in harness and connector in IGT signal circuit between ECM and ignition coil with igniter. Repair as necessary. If okay, go to next step.
  5. Remove the engine room ECU cover. Measure the voltage between terminals IGT1-IGT8 of the ECM connector and body ground when the engine is cranked. See Fig 2. Voltage should be more than 0.1 volts and less than 4.5 volts. If using oscilloscope, during cranking or idling, check the waveform between terminals IGT1-IGT8 and E1 of the ECM connector. See Fig 3. If voltage or waveform is to specification, go to next step. If voltage or waveform is not to specification, replace ECM.

  6. Remove the engine room ECU cover. Disconnect the ignition coil with the igniter connector. Measure the voltage between terminals IGT1-IGT8 of the ECM connector and body ground when the engine is cranked. See Fig 2. If voltage is more than 0.1 volt and less than 4.5 volt, go to next step. If voltage is not to specification, replace ECM.
  7. Disconnect the ignition coil with the igniter connector. Measure the voltage between terminal No. 1 of the ignition coil with the igniter connector and body ground when the ignition switch is turned to ON and START position. See Fig 4. If voltage is 9-14 volts, repair ignition coil with igniter power source circuit. If voltage is not to specification, go to next step.
  8. Check for open and short in harness and connector between ignition switch and ignition coil with igniter. Repair or replace harness or connector as necessary. If okay, replace ignition coil with igniter.
